As far as I can surmise, the "A" is the letter Penn used for its reels that exported to South Africa. So "A" may mean "Africa".

When I bought my first Penn back in the 80s I asked the guys by Anglers Corner what was the difference between the A and the L. He showed me the 2 reels from the boxes. The A was the bekalite spool and the L was the alluminium spool.

If as you say A is for Africa what is L for then. Ask the older generation and they will help you right.

Go to a decent tackle shop and ask the oldest person there.

I await your reply.

As far as letter add ons go, the "L" is for Aluminum Spool.

The only other time Penn used a letter "A" is on the 10/0 Senator Model 116A. They did that for different reason than the 500A and 49A.
