Here is a penn torque 30 reel, the bottom driveshaft bearing collapsed whike fighting a big fish. This damage the housing, driveshaft and the retaining shaft plate. The driveshaft i machined to fix and because water lays in the bottom bearing housing mainly when wading i machined a custom self lubrication bush which will work much better and never give this kind of problem again. Sorry about the late reply i have not beennon sealine for a while as you will note and just saw this request this morning.
The bearings are high quality and last quite long they are made by Axial in the penn torque reels.
Yes this reel was serviced before by me. It is not a new reel and is the original bearing, the problem is that the bearing packed up on a huge raggie and it was fished still and landed another fish after this also. Bearings cannot last forever wading salt water remains here and the strain on these bearings are tremedous, no fault of the reel not bearing as said it started packing up on a huge fish but fishing continued still even after it did and even after it collapsed fishing continued for another comp still. This shows how good the reels actually are as the bearing was not working at all, it was basically non existant yet the reel functioned and did what was requested of it.

What i was trying to figure out was, generally bearings will fail when turning at high speeds/heat, seizing etc. If a bottom driveshaft fails, we know it isnt due to any one of those, going by the details, did it mean, that the drag was tightened too much, could that be a possibility, as it applied a vertical pull/force, or because it seized, he wouldnt have been reeling too fast? Im just trying to get to what could cause these type of failures for my own knowledge and reels and how to prevent these. I know the Trini A's have a locking plate, does the Torque have one?

Aaaagh, just noticed in pic 3 there is what appears to be a locking plate.
I see on the 2 shafts/pins where the clutch springs go on, are also damaged , what would cause that?
Is this a common occurrence with bottom driveshaft bearings, do you get alot of reels that have this same failure?

You have all the answers the techical ones. My last reply actually would explain why. Wading, water, salt and pressure creates wear on any bearing, high speed is not needed, high torque creates way more pressure and damage than high speed, it generates pressure, creates friction and with this comes heat. The original bearings were in use still and can only last for so long, all depends on how the bearings were looked after before i got to service these reels for the first time. A proper service will prolong life but if it was not looked after correctly before, it can only last so long.
This reel is waded all the time so waterlogged also. Preventative treatments are done as required but if damage had started before it will evntually fail.

Baie dankie meneer! So basically just maintenance, and an old bearing. Probably pays to check your bearings regularly or change them regularly. Keep up the good work!..
