hi guys

I have an infanta with a 90 Yamaha on the back,

I am looking for a spare motor ( just i case), i think a 15hp should do

I have been offered a older Yamaha or a brand new Parsun

any one used or have a parsun, id really appreciate some thoughts,

My initial thoughts, are that if i am looking for a backup motor to bring me home, Yamaha is the way to go

thoughts ?

The Parsun looks pretty good but as they say, just because a particular lady is beautiful, doesn't mean she isn't full of crap.

You can answer this one very easily.
Call any three boating shops and ask if they have spares for either brand.
See which one they keep.

IMO I would rather have a second hand known and reliable brand, than a brand new shiny piece of unhappiness.

Looks like we are in the same "boat" as to speak. i also opened a thread looking for a 15hp to add for safety. Starting to think that the 15 would get me through a surf, also if the wind blows towards you, and you need to get out...would it be possible with a 15hp?

My Old man has a 75Merc on his duck, as well as a 40hp Tohatsu for spare. its just a bit heavy.

Go S/H Yamaha rather!

I have read a few reviews on the brand and although 50% are fine with them, the general census is they are not what you expect! At the and of the day they are not Yamahas! They are Chinese copies of it. They are heavy, vibrate, use excessive fuel and nobody can work on them!

I've read about them leaking oil from brand new etc.

Just do a search!

I see suzuki are now doing 2stroke 15-40hp again due to demand, and I hear at decent prices. Dont know what that is though.
worth a look.
2 places i would not stuff around, in the air and at sea. Would you put a parsun in your home buit aeroplane?

Hi

I also have the same duck "infanta 5.2 with 75hp Mercury" just added a 15 hp Mercury as backup. It's Ok and will push the boat ok in wind and swell. You would do about 5 km/h. Trolling speed.... I want go smaller because then yo are going to need to use your oars.

Cheers Guys

As far as I have it a Parsum, if bought from a legit dealer aka affiliated with Motor king  in Pretoria who is the sole importers,is  a rather solid motor. The story I hear is that Parsum already controls 30% of the small motor(below 30hp) market. 95% of the parts are compatible with a Yamaha and Motor King is sitting on top of R1.6 million  of spares.
I read in  a review on 15hp motors that in a test between 6 brands Tuhatsu came out tops with Honda and Parsum in close second. Blocks are cast by Kia in Taiwan and rest of the parts comes from Canada/USA. Assemble takes place in China because of cheap labour.

When it comes down to price nothing beats a Parsum though.
Parsum 15hp(2stroke) R12000 compared to a Mariner/Mercury 15hp R23000.
Conversion kit to steering  is only R1250 making this a killer deal!

In all, good and bad reviews from users, however we don’t know how much these bad reviewers know about motors and how well they cared for theirs before they gave problems.
Most important thing to do with any motor but Parsum/Suzuki especially is to protect against corrosion and rinse your motor with fresh, clean water after every use!
And of course buy from legit dealer.

If you stil dont want to risk is the next option is a Tuhatsu. Then Honda, then a Mariner/Mercury and only then a Yamaha. ( Price was included in my reasoning)

who sells them in the western cape ?
I think Boland Boats sells them in CPT and I know Open Ocean Composites sells them is Somerset West.

Go to http://www.openocean.co.za. All motor info is on there.

I know these two are the only legit dealers at the moment.
