Hey all - caught a skipjack tuna off cape point today (first one, quite chuffed) however when I cleaned it I noticed white spots under the skin in what could only be parasites. I cut them all out but now i’m unsure whether the fish is okay to eat or not?

The pic isnt my oic but its the exact same “parasites” as reference

Caught quite a few over the last few weeks but never noticed any parasites on them. I remember a while ago this quaetion was asked on Sealine. Use the search. Unlike with snoek which i would eat with parasites, I would not know what to do with that invested fish. They are delicious as sashimi or smoked.

Don't eat!!!!! You could be the first to get COVID21:?:?

Ok, but seriously, most parasites are very specific to their host, so fish parasites are unlikely to also infect humans... the closer the creature is related to man, the more likely the parasite is to be able to cross over and infect people. There are a few exceptions. So ya, parasite infected mammals, especially primates, are a big no-no. Other creatures are less of a problem. With that said, if you cook anything at high temperature, you kill off the parasites and you can eat them.

Was it really skipjack (unusual to find at the point - they are normally much deeper) or katonkel (very common at the point). In this case the species does make a difference.....
