YUP! Richards Bay can be painful, that's for sure... You really have to work for your fish... My hit rate is better than most because I'm literally always on the water...
1. Nice Garrick in the mouth and the point around Pelican Island, but you must have live bait, patience and persistence is key... Early morning/late afternoon...
2. Best place for live bait, in and around the yachts, and the point of North and South breakwaters... Use azuire rigs... Cheap and effective... You could use live shad but the season is closed...
3. Paddling to the caravan park certainly has it's rewards, but it's a haul. You will need a fish finder to find the reefs, excellent pig nose grunter... And who knows what you'll pick up along the way if trolling.
4. You can paddle to New Mouth but it's a haul and I would not suggest you go alone... Again you would need a fish finder.
5. Or just use Richards Bay as a base and fish Nhlbhane, Cape Vidal, Port Durnford, etc. Again do not go alone.
6. Then again just camp at Cape Vidal and you are guaranteed an adventure and fish without all the hard work.
7. A very slow troll along the breakwaters very early in the morning has proven very successful for me, but you need to get to the breakwaters as the sun is coming up...
