Out of the box thinking required

Howzit gents

So i have the average power tools an average joe soap would have in his garage and want to start making some homemade poppers and stick baits.

I've been frothing at the mouth reading all these posts you guys place in the DIY section.

So here is my question, i'm not prepared to go buy a huge laith simply to pop out the odd 10 - 20 wooden lures.

So what can i use as a substitute for a laith?????

A drill on low, if yes how do i go about mounting the wood? What do you guys do.

Hey this may be a silly question, but hell maybe some of you guys are lateral thinkers and have brilliant ideas

Wood lathes are really quite affordable. A while back, I had an extra lathe lying round and I sold it to a mate for R500. He wanted to use it for turning poppers.

Check out the classifieds daily on Gumtree/junkmail/olx etc. People have stuff lying round and one day, they say to themselves "I must get this thing out of here" and they put stuff up for sale at very affordable prices.

There's one at Adendorfs for R1495. http://www.adendorff.co.za/ProductDetails.aspx?id=537

If you need turning tools, I have a set in stock that you can take off me at cost. It's been on the shelf for best part of 2 years.

Thing is, you will have a helluva lot of fun with a lathe.

Limpopoking, i have my priorities right at home, which has the wife giving me the hairy eyeball. I have my boat and all my boating equipment stored in my garage, with both our cars parked outdoors. Then I've put in an entrance at the back of the garage directly into the "maids quarters" that i've now converted into my fishing equipment storage area (Man cave). So space is a problem, hence the thread.

I'm with you mate. I know people build lathes using an electric drill as a drive. Perhaps a google search will turn up some interesting and simple solutions.

You could use a broomstick handle. Try find the center using a compass - we did this in geometry back in the day - not sure of the exact way to do it now. Cut a groove along the belly halfway and drill a hole in the in the middle of the stick - like a t-shape - if you decide to have a hook there too. Then you add your wire into the groove and fill with resin or hot glue to keep the wire in. Coat with a sealer/ epoxy, sand , paint and seal again.

Ive only made 2 of these this way but im sure there are still even easier ways to do it.

Was in the same boat a while ago, in short, get a lathe!

Will save you hours of trying to turn out poppers in all the unconventional ways..

To make poppers:
Jelutong wood - 40mmx40mm - have them cut it for you.
Wood Lathe
One Chisel - I use the 10mm one from Grip
One 6mm long drill bit - as long as you can find
Circlip pliers - to make the loops in stainless
Round Burr - to create space for the weight at the back of the popper
4mm steel bit - drill out the insides of the pop rivets
Crimping tool
