Hi guys,

Went yesterday to wet a quick line, we went to an old quarry and when I saw the dam from a distance I could see fish jumping and going mad, thought it's probably the carp jumping.

On closer inspection I saw its bass jumping like crazy, I easily saw 50 or so bass jump during the 2 hours that I was there. Is this normal for them to jump like this, because I have never seen bass jump before for no reason?

We got 5 bass between me and Jerry all about the same size...

It is normal. I think they might be hunting but I might be wrong. We saw a couple of them jumping at injaka as well

hey skaap tjop...

nice fish!!! is this dam open to the public??? quite interested in going and wetting a line for some bass but dont know the venues up here in jhb...

also dont know what baits they like...

went to footloose trout farm in the wknd and got a 100g bass... not the best but it is a start for me...
got it with a 2" grub minnow.... but im looking for better venues and catches....

please can you offer some advice on how i can imprrove...

Unfortunately is not open to the public,  I get invited by other people and that’s the way I get to fish those waters… I don’t really know any places in j’burg to fish for bass, I usually fish in and around pta, you should talk to LGF about venues he knows gauteng pretty well in terms of bass locations.

As for what the bass like up here, if I knew I would catch more bass. This is actually a question for Johanvc, but I would start by buying a few plastics like superfluke, deadringers, curly tail some brushhogs or lizards and a few spinnerbaits and maybe a chatterbait or two. That would pretty much cover it for a start…

All you need then is a decent venue and persistence and you’ll get them. The guys in the forum go out every month or so on a bass trip somewhere in gauteng, you should join them that’s where you’ll learn the most.

LGF, Johanvc, Ryan give the man some expert advice…

The one you thinking of is in Samrand and don’t go there. We were robbed while fishing there in December and were told by the cops they go there every day for robbery

But I just want to make it quite clear that I'm no xpert when it comes top bass - just kinda very lucky. I also don't target them specifically although they are one of the weighable species on the artlure circut I prefer fishing for the more difficult species to cath on lures.

I think the bass pro's Johan and LGF would be the right people to ask.

Rapala your comment about the bass spawning - they are not doin the bizniz just yet. All the early spawners (Bass, Kurper Muddies etc) wait for the first rains to occur. Before that they are just gettin busy with the preperation work. Usually at this time of the year the males move into the shallows to secure the prime breeding spots and although they suffer from locjaw if you irritate them enough with a chatter, jig or sominthing similar they will attact it more out of aggression than anything else.

The ladies feed right up till the first rains and through out the spawn. As in the case with most fish whilist some are spawning others are feeding and then they swap - I belive it is possible to catch bass year round Spawn or not - just different times dictate different methods.

Sorry for the late reply diamond digger but I am extremely busy at the moment.

Ok baits to start off with. The following baits and colors are from my own experience. Your standard colors to go for when starting bass fishing would be your Watermelon red, Watermelon Candy and watermelon, Junebug, Green pumpkin.
The baits would be 4” senko’s, 5” senko’s and flukes and for the spawn some lizards and a chatter bait or two.

Now colors in Chatter baits I would recommend are Black and Blue and Copper.
Colors I would recommend in Senko’s are Black and blue, Green Pumpkin, Chartreuse and white and Junebug
Flukes: Junebug, All the watermelon colors and Green Pumpkin
Lizards you can use the same colors as the flukes

Tackle wise I would recommend getting some Texas weights, some small mojo weights. To start off with I think this is all you would need.
Just remember the basic rule of bass fishing. Use darker colors in dirty water and more natural colors in clean water. But never forget to try different things as we have used dark colors in clean water like a black and blue senko and nailed the big fish. Always keep an open mind and try new things

Johan I wanna buy a baitcaster - what would you reccomend?

Looking @ the pt energy and maybe a shimano chronarch.

Ryan that is a very difficult question. I own a couple of quantum bait casters but recently started replacing them with the Bass pro Shop Johnny Morris Signature series and the Elite series Bait casters. I have used a couple of others as well just to test and nothing can come close to those reels. They a bit pricy with the signature series going for R1400 and the elite going for R1800 but believe me you will not go back to any other bait caster after you have tried these. I will bring one of each with tomorrow and you can have a look at them. How much do you want to spend?

I find this thread interesting because i use to fish Olifantsfontein every Friday afternoon after school with my old man great catches but even better memories.

My Question is who's arm can i pull with a bottle of Klippies or something to fish there again i would love to take my boy there to create some new great memories with him, if there is anybody that could put in a good word for me it wont go unrewarded.
