This is a fine heavy duty scarborough used for throwing life bait before the advent of the slide bait.I can't remember the last time i saw an angler through a live shad with a scarborough !!! Its made from Kiaat wood and has brass fitting.Runs on old imperial size bearing. The handles are made from a wood called Lignum Vitae which is a wood that has self lubricating properties.

Hi Alwyn,

This is called a starback reel.It looks like it was made in England around about 1920/30.

Some of the makers stamped their name on the foot.

It might have been made by a company called Milward Bartleet who exported a lot of these reels to S.A

Cheers

Simon
