old purglas

hey fellow sealiners

I found one of my old man's old rods, a old purglas 400/3
Thinking of giving it a good working over. Is it worth the
effort?

Checked the rod, and it is still in pretty decent
condition. A couple of eyes missing and the varnish is
need of a touch up. No cracks or anything.

Also, what will be a good reel for the rod? See that its
rated 15-25kg. Will post some pics tomorrow.

I have a exact the same one. If its the executive one? Excellent rod with nice action. Think it rates 6ounce but believe me, ive overloaded mine with a 6ounce and mullet or shad head flaps. Comes to more or less 8 or 9ounce lol.

Used a 20/40 , penn990 , penn555 , and elbe procast 50 on mine. Think it will match up nice with a tor30 , saltist40 , finor30 .

Eyes are a tad on the small side but i manage to use a 1mm leader.

Gr8 rod for large eds and medium indes . Biggest 4 me being a 37kg rag and i pulled the crap out of it lol

Agree with Roland.
What do you mean by old?
I use mine on a regular basis and it can handle an 8oz sinker easily if the bait is not to big.
Strong enough to handle big bronzies.
Caught my biggest with it.
Give it a make over, you wont be sorry.
Use any reel you fancy, I still use a Daiwa350, with Siglon .57
Let me stop, otherwise you send me, to an old age home.

yes, executive. I wanna put proper eyes on the rod as most of them are old (experienced) and worn. also wanna give the rod a good working over.

Its pretty stiff. was thinking of matching it with a tor30.
Tested it with an old (experienced) shim 20/40 with a 6 ounce and almost felt underloaded.

@ Roland
Thats exactly what I had in mind for it. are you happy with the rod? don't wanna put too much effort into it if I'm gonna be dissapointed. Havn't really targetted big ineds, so I'll start off with medium size ones. have never used a slide - banking on you and AD teaching me when I get around to fish with you guys :)

@ ignatius
When I say old, I mean experienced. In the early 90s it landed a couple of tuna off robberg, "the gap" as well as numerous cracker, roman, red steenbras and poensies west of robberg towards jack's point

purglas 400/3 - 6-8ounce

great for live bait, throw baits on those banks waiting for anything to come.

You just cant beat the action of a one piece rod!!

I agree with khan i have two purglas (1 piece)and they are lovely casting rods. They are a bit heavier than the new graphite rods that are now available but they have plenty of BACKBONE.....

ENJOY...:cong:

Most that fish with me know that i use 1 piece rods purglas mostly,

I do agree that my older ones are a bit heavy but the newer ones are much lighter, they cast very well and you will immediately have the convidence to pull as hard as you want and put in all that you want when casting as well,

even if its directly after dropping the rod by mistake whilst threading your leader threw the guides!!

I am sure you guys know what i mean.

Full convidence, results in you landing that fish because you trust yourself to make the right decisions.

The 2 rods I found.
The brown one is 12'6" and pretty heavy

The other is the one I talked about in the thread. Its actually not that heavy.

Is it the same rod you guys are referring to?

Yup. . . . My uncle had 2, one is Rolands now and the other was taken over by Mango. The casting action of the 400/3 is much better than my exage 3 piece

Yup, the one on top.

I dont have any info on the bottom one, but it is a later model than the old castmasters.
