Casting the reel.

Being spooled with 0.45mm I found the startup and balance of speed out of kilter with 3-4oz weights on a fair cast so I dropped the leader and maintained steady 100m distances with the odd 120m using lighter line and leader and it will be a comfortable light reel but the powerful gears and durability would be sorely wasted on such light tackle.

Switching up to 5oz and dummy bait and then 6-7oz and the combo really kicked in. The casting court is limited to 150m and any power into the cast and I found my sinker hanging in the trees behind the court easily reaching 160m+

The next test were dummy bait on the 8’6” where pitching a dummy Mackerel (without a rolling boat deck) No problem to pitch the baits 35-45m

Without actually testing it, I can confidently say that the reel will easily accept a static mag cast control and could be filled with 80lbs+ braid for Jigging and popping with an overhead reel or to maximise, rock and surf casting potential

The ratchet lever can be adjusted ever so slightly to add control to the cast, much like a cast control cap and these micro adjustments make the reel a pleasure to cast.

Nice Craig !
In comparison to the Talica , would you say this reel is better in terms of casting , drag , servicing etc ?
obviously comparing the equivelant sized Talica to this ...

Very solid looking reel i must say !

Spool standard is much faster than the Talica and drag setting not as high but more than adequate.

The micro freespool adjustments makes it more casting friendly

The drag isn't a fully sealed unit but the whole reel is corrosion resistant and drains easily

Expected to retail in the R4500 for the 12S (much like a 20 size) and R5000 for the 16S similar to 25

II Speeds are on order but I have no idea on their pricing

The Metaloid 12S which I will also post a review on will be in the R3900 range

I don't retail the reels was only asked by a retailer to give an input on the reels.

Would I fish them..... Yes, would be my reel of choice for Yellowtail from the rocks (Magg'd) or from a boat.

PS: Note I am not working for the distributor or reimburrsed for my opinion on the reels.

Previous custodians of the brand did little to convince the mid to high end buying public of this though, so our mind-set remained - cheap, entry level, low quality - holiday purchases at best. Lack of back up did little to help.
The quality products have been there for ages from Okuma.
They are upping the game though.
Looks like it is changing for the better.
Nice to see.

Wait till you experience the rods they are making for us

From Budget to High end Makaira quality rods. They had a complete retooling of the rod factory 2 years ago and the quality and capacity of output have been dramatically increased and they have some technically adept engineers (who happen to be top Fishermen and casters) running the R&D on the rods.

First time I've worked with international R&D staff that understand our specs on Rock and Surf as well as boat rods for RSA and delivered test samples that met the requirements on first delivery, and to be fair exceeded expectation on quality, looks and most importantly, performance.

I'm even more exited about this
