Any other decent baitrunner would be fine for social fishing but if you can afford it go for the shimano's, otherwise the okuma's would also work. The okuma's are great reels for their price, i just prefer a rear drag.

This is my okuma silvara that I have at the moment. Last weekend the ratchet broke when I was taking in the lines so now the baitrunner is totally useless! So I dont want to go for okuma again. Was I wrong to just flick up my baitrunner switch to take in the line?

hmmmmm.....thats strange, although not the correct way i have also done it a good few times but i have never experianced that. when taking your lines out either have a buddy on the bank holding the rod with the bail arm open or if you have an inlatable or little dinghy take the rod out with you.

when you fishing distance make sure you have a decent size lead on so that when you try to staighten out your line the sinker is heavy enough so that you feel it on the other side.if you try fishing distance with a light sinker on a windy day and you try and straighten out your line you wont even know if your pulling the lead away from your intended spot or not. also after you have taken your line out and when you back on the back setting up your line try and hold the rod tip in the water facing the direction in which your line has been dropped. this is just my 2c and a way that i have found which works for me. i still stand for correction as there are guys with soo much more experiance on this splended site.
