177cm PCL female blacktip. around 90kg's.

Both my pulls were on sandie(the gills section). Tackle used was a Tor 30, brand new 0.55mm bigame and a 1.4mm wind-on leader. Rod used: Technuim heavy. I love this combo. The day started off with Jacques first going tight with his ducky ,his fish went on a 200m run and we did not know what it was at first then when it came back in and we saw a big white thing in the wave we knew ducky then I had to get my rod and hold it up on the sand dune while his fish was going up and down and side to side, then a good 30-40 minutes into his fight I feel a bump then line starts peeling off, wait for him to get going and slowly increase the drag and lift the rod until drag was locked, then was into the braid and he went on a good 150-200m run before he jumped twice at the end of his run ,then she just came in like a good fish over the lip by herself with me just keeping tension then she decided to box like a rag for 5 minutes taking 20m of line at a time before going left, she was about 150m in total distance left of where I was and in about 1m of water and I could see her and a stupid edible fisherman kept on fishing with his braid 10m from where my shark was ,thank goodness my fish came back right and when he did I ran down to the beach and ran left and got as much line as I could trying to keep an angle on the fish and it worked, 2 minutes later the fish was in the whitewater, Jacques gave his rod to a local to hold while he quickly ran and leadered my fish out ,we quickly took some pictures, measured it and then released it. Then we focused back to Jacques ducky, 10 minutes later I went in and gently leadered his fish, a solid 60odd kg's and a damn good fight. Thank goodness our lines never crossed while on with our fish. So we were both a little drained after that and chilled for 30 minutes, then I decided at 6 to slide out another sandy bait at 7pm I'm holding my rod when I get pulled flat, another blacktip but a few seconds later I'm off and wondering what the hell happened ,the line parted at the catspaw connection to the 50lb wind-on. wouldn't of ever expected that to happen but with fishing you are always learning, could have soo easily have been 2 blacktips in the space of 3 hours, now just imagine that. I'm happy with the one but the other one still bugs me.

Okay guys so here's my fishing report for this weekend. Decided to hit Covies with a mate and we were gonna fish for some sharks as usual. Last 2 times I fished covies I never even got a pull and the sea was flat, but when we arrived there today the sea was big and we couldn't get down onto the bottom ledge to cast from so we had to cast from the top. First bait out for me was a whole flapped friggate and after 2 hours nothing, mate sent out a chokka and had a pull but the fish missed the hooks. Next bait out and Grant rekons I should slide a tail head, it's been sitting in my freezer since April so it's not the freshest bait. Grant slides a makkie bait, so it's now 10 am and nothing's happening and grant tells me matt your rod, so I run pick it up and start to reel in the slack so I then feel a fish so I then I wait for it to pull me flat and then I slowly set the circle hook and then on dad a few seconds later and we see surface action, semi jumps and tail slapping so I ease off on the drag and just play the fish until he eventually goes left, but when it went it took me left it went over some reef and for a minute or so my line was stuck, but thankfully the fish swam the 0.58KFGA free and then it kept on going left at which point it was about 250-300m out and then I decided to bolt for the beach so I made the 600m run through soft sand and water but unfit so ja just had to catch my breath for a minute but at that point the fish was beaten. then I just went as far left as I could to try and get an angle on the fish which worked and he came in over the lip on the low pretty easily. Second blacktip and a first fish for me on my newly acquired Saltist 50BG. 167cm PCL or 75kg's according to fishweights. And I owe this fish to my tennis racquet string wind-on as it jumped and the leader was badly frayed but it still held.

Okay so we hit mazeppa bay on thursday and had a pretty bad day with no fish landed and just raggies messing around with our baits off the island. Anyway so early Friday I was at the Island again and slide a nice small mackeral off the front right hand side of the island and after about 10 minutes caught a nice 8kg grey shark. I wanted to swim him and some guys already had put out 2 baits on the kite and offered to send out my grey whole on the kite so I quickly ran and got my shark extreme heavy and lever drag rigged up and put on a 2.5mm wind-on and 4m of 287lb steel with 2 big Tuna J-hooks(those expensive ones) . Everything was right except for the fact that my knots and steel were not exactly neat and finished off properly as we were in a hurry to put it out so the shark would stay alive. So we dropped him at 300m and I waited for around 2 hours and got a raggie pull but it came in about 50m and dropped the bait . So I left it out there and chilled. Then the pull came at 10am 4 bites and then down one way, I let him run for 20m then I wacked up the drag to 15kg's and struck him like I've never struck a fish before. afterwards it was basically tight drag and straight sticking as the drag was so tight it wasn't possible to lift the rod , the first hour of the fight the fish was playing around on the left hand side of the Island , the first run was around 200m on a tight drag ,over 15kg's for sure, then the rest of the first hour of the fight the fish was still playing around on the left hand side of the island. The 2nd and third hours of the fight the fish was basically going straight off the front of the island and going left and then right but not really taking much line as she was trying to sit in the currents . After about 2hr 45min the fish went right towards the pot and I made my decision and bailed towards the beach with the fish still on and the drag around 7 kgs, getting across the bridge was pretty difficult while trying to keep the line tight on her but I got to the beach in one piece and ran right and got an angle on the fish and about 10 minutes later Jacques grabbed the leader and we had her. From a distance it looked like a buss bronzie but when we saw the ridge we knew it was a monster grey female. She was very wide and measured 275cm PCL , IM 105KGS AND COULD FIT INSIDE THAT SHARK, it's mouth was much wider than my shoulders. According to fishweights its 297kg's but the measurement we took was a conservative one so it could have been 300kg's I rekon. Anyway the fish is a dam monster and I am very privileged to have landed her. It all worked out for me that day, the dolphins didnt swim into my line, the sea was flat and I had the right tackle and bait.

Here are a few raggie that I caught on my recent trip back to south africa, some were caught on slide and others on kite. Didn't take a photo of a few fish to ensure a quick release.

Raggie no.1 of 3 at fish point, weight sub 100kg.Caught on slide with tennis racquet string wind-on and 350/7 rod and banax 50 with 0.55mm big game.
