Octopus Leg Bait

Hiya Walt,

Long time no Chat!

Like everything else these days it's being sold commercially as bait. It's has been in PE for some time, sold by a chap operation from Humandorp. He sells small tubs containing about 4 - 5 legs for about R25. I amazed you don't find in CT tackle shops yet?

Yip,as Brendon said, they have the Ockie Leg in Tuckers, and i have bought from this source. But,it's far more rewarding catching Chokka as well as Ockie,if you can,and at least you can be certain as to how fresh it truely is.

But,until i can get a closer place to source it,will have to settle for Tuckers, whose quality admittedly does seem OK.There's just obviously nothing to beat something that you know has come straight out of the sea.

Plus,if you can source it yourself, you can be assured it hasn't passed through too many hands and thus being subjected to thawing out, frozen and refrozen, time and again.

And This is a problem I'm having with Mussels. Can't seem to get fresh ones and appears to have been through too many hands/suppliers.

Anyway,just my 2c!

The fresher the better....

Walt's occie he gave me didnt amount to kob but caught a few smooth hounds in langebaan.

Tjokka caught on a wednesday caught kob on the thursday morning while the rest of the rods were quiet....

Walt i have the right equipment for catching the occies. Apparantly towards the reserve there are a few about. I'm not a big fan of bought octopus. The skin just doesnt look the same to me as a southern cape slimy 8 footer...

Hey Trophy,

Just come across this post.  Going to C Point tomorrow, will give it a go.

Thank and mana
Wow,ST.This thread is a blast from the past, even the okkies are now 5 years older, hehehe!

So,lets hope you get those 'grown up' Okkies, lol.

They do make good bait. Can get those days when you throw everything, and finally Okkie leg, where a Cob jumps out the water to catch it before leg hits the water.

I know a spot where its just about like that,if you want to join in.

Can't guarantee instant success, but persistence may pay off.

Anyway,Good Luck!

Hey Walt,

Long time no see.

My spare wheel, Archar, has deserted me for the next week so I am venturing out lonesome.

I'm not hunting for Occcy tomorrow, rather, going to use it for the first time in the reserve. It is the only bait that I have not used to this point. I got a fatty today, who, by all accounts wants to be repatriated to the ocean. Im going to see that he is.

I was out there a few weeks ago and hooked up with a guy that dives the area. He tells, and I hope not relate lores of Cracker about. Being on the Atlantic side I am suspicious of these stories, but hey, who dares may just win.

Please let me know of any plans afoot, if I can, then I will happily join.

Cool, best to keep tabs on 'safety in numbers' thread. We raised 5 guys this Friday, fished unsafe areas, but safe within parameters of 'safety in numbers'.I'm sure the other 4 would agree.

Anyone's welcome, there were some newbies who couldn't make it,and it's not about who's the best angler, but about safety, with catches a bonus if they happen.

Cape Point?Send me a pm if it's during week that you go,as weekends are a bit hectic for me.

Cheers

What works for me when cleaning/skinning octopus "legs",
after cutting the "legs" from the octopus's body is to throw them in sea sand, soil, dirt etc.(the dryer the better)
covering the leg completely and then just start pulling the skin and suckers from the thick part to the thin part.

Works every time.(unless you are on a boat and there is no sea sand etc. available.)
