Now for the old faithfuls that so many anglers cut their teeth on !
The Speedy IV and its narrow spooled brother, that is sadly not produced anymore - the compact, narrow Speedy III was a favourite gallie - and for that matter allround compact reel, of many anglers that preferred narrow spooled reels years ago.

The TLD2040S and TLD1530S are realy the same basic reels, but with a 5.2:1 gear ratio instead of the 6.0:1 of the Speedy, plus the TLD has a bush in the left sideplate to fit the spool shaft, where the Speedy comes standard with a bearing.

For best casting and smooth highspeed running, I normally replace the bush with a bearing on the TLD, if its not already done.

Let's see if we have a pic of the magbrake fitted - all four models look the same, but I occasionally find a really wild Speedy IV that needs eight magnets instead of the standard six - like with the Torium in stacks of two high.

The alternate dots you see on the magnets, are indicators of the polarity - the magnets are fitted with alternate polarity next to one another, so that they help stabilise one another instead of "fighting" for space on the magplate.

Lovely affordable reels that are almost "bulletproof" and can cast with reels costing almost four times the price after a few modifications !

cost for 15/30 and speedmaster IV please

Hi camboy - exactly the same as for your Torium 30 (PM), as they all use roughly six magnets. You can also just send the lefhand sideplates of these two models like on the Toriums 16/20/30.

Cheers

Looks fairly simple.
Are there kits online you can buy or can you get these from some hardware/tooling shops?

I would not even go through the trouble of trying to source this online, I'll just send my reels to CC and let him fit it.

He already sourced the best magnets for the job, and did an excellent job on my Saltist.

Looks can be very deceiving  !

Plates are from a special magnetic stainless alloy with just the right bias between the two normally conflicting charachteristics.

Lasercut for perfect fit and prepaired for proper fitting.

Magnets of specific size/format and material to handle saltwater and have a practical range of adjustibility to handle different rods/lines/sinker weights and casting strokes.

You are welcome to PM me, if you need further information.

Cheers

You may have a point there Koper. I have always been one to try "diy" & know my own equipment, so at the end of the day I could repair with ease if needed.

Agree, I like to fiddle as well, but with something like this, a once off, why reinvent the wheel, CC has already done the legwork in this case.

You quite right there Koper. Might as well "abuse" CC _seal1_

Very nice Cuban. I am actually pondering about getting another 15/30 reel but want to fit a speedmaster gear system inside to make it a fast reel to spin with, would be nice as a leerie reel with a 100M exage.....will let you know if I do this, then might have to tame it .....;)

Grootvis, that is a very interesting idea you have there. My son (11) has been nagging me to teach him to cast with a multiplier. I got him a 110H heavy. I just got a pair of Cedros 15(that have been magged by Enigma), to pair with these rods. This we plan to use as a pension pipe set-up from the bricks.

15/30 with the 100M old exage may just be the thing for him to cut his teeth on. He can then scratch with this setup and also start practicing to cast spoons and plugs.

I fished for many years with 20/40 star drag and speedmaster. Speedmaster cast like a dream.

Please keep us posted if you go that route, many thanks.

I do not want to start the Diawa vs Shimmie war again but:

Get your son the SL20SH - it is a narrow spool reel - takes about 300 meters of 0.36 braid. The centrifugal cast control inside the reel will curb almost all overwinds during casting and the reeling in of the line being a narrow spool will help your son to lay the line on evenly.

Hi Dirk !

While on the above topic and also showing your impartiality, why don't you tell us, how that heavily modded 1530 of yours, eventually performed, during our "swimming session" for the gallies at Macs, on Sunday ?

Is it easier to lay line more evenly on a narrow spool?:

Would like to know the mods and performance of that 15/30 too.

dswart, many thanks for the advice, will be starting him off on the SL20SH, after I have it magged by Enigma.
