Non Return Slide

Hi Guys

Mango and I decided to test some slides that he made so we could satisfy ourselves they are strong enough.

So in the test we rigged the slide to steel wire and then connected the wire to the vice.

The wind on was tied to a stopper ring with a thimble. Note the shape of the slide.

I then fastened the 1.3mm wind-on around me and leaned back at about 75% of my pulling power and made short little shock pulls to simulate headshakes.

I also did a test with 100% pulling power for a continuos period.

Note how the thimble broke very easily, it however did its job but concerned was raised about tension around the stopper ring after it broke.

We tested a stainless steel 1.6mm rod versus a spring steel 1.6mm. To us the result was not so much different but the spring steel definitely seem to corrode and that can be an issue with abrading your line.

The end result was as follows:

No matter how hard we pulled we could not brake the slide, except on the spring steel one where the swivel popped.

But the slides all held out and never opened. We did improve the slide with test as this was the goal.

It is interesting to note that all the slides bent at the "coil" even the stronger 2mm one.

Next test will be with a scale to see what 7kg of force will do to a slide as that is what most say one can exert on a fish with a rod.

Hugo, can i bring you my slide that you made last year? It has caught plenty and i think its abit dead after the cow!!Need to get some with the beads please!!

KT you are more than welcome there is some new ideas we want to put in to practice and Havoc also want some .How is the 1 year old slide looking that is the Question

We used the slides last nite and boy did they go down quick! Just to get a fish on them to see how they will hold up.

 

Will be building a stronger version soon... with some more tests.

I make my non-return clips with 1.6mm S/S spring wire, 4 coils, a bead and a longer than normal leg with and a 3/4oz weight. They slide very well, are strong and don't wrap around the mainline in a swell and don't rust. I'm hoping to get my hands on some 2mm S/S spring wire and that will probably be the ultimate in strength.
 
How do you get 1 slide to last 1 year? I must go through at least 20 in a season if not more!! I've seen a guy go through 20 in a week on the wild coast!!

Fluke /Inky I normaly make them out of 2mm ss with out beads and only use no:2 power swivels and some of those have lasted more than a year and is still catching fish Not one has colapsed yet.

Kopstamp suggested we try the smaller ones so it will be fun to see and as you mentioned the 3 hour pull, as we speak there is one rig in my garage with a 20 kilo bag of dog food suspended off it .I agree that will be a better test long term strain.

Graig agreed they are KUK (thimbles)also went for a steel connection last night.

The average of the second batch that I built have at least landed 5 fish. They just last.(Not including lost and burnt )

Thats what I mean, you have to get stuck or burned off or broken off somewhere along the line!

I also retire my slides after 2 or 3 visits to the sea, they are in great shape but I must get round to replacing the power swivels, it's them I don't trust!

the wire in the test was there to simulate the slide trace as putting the slide connected to the sviwel into the vice would not give the same result. does that make sense?

We will build the 2mm tomorrow and let you guys know.
