No Tagging for Gautengers

Hi Guys,

I recently contacted the ORI in order to obtain info on how to join the tag and release program. To my dismay I was told that they no longer take on recreational anglers as part of their program. I know we don't always get to go as often as we would like to and therefore I offered to pay my own way and the reply was: "Thank you all the same, but we need fish tagged!"

I dont want to step on any toes here or go against any protocol, but I am sure that if we "Binnelanders" as well as the recreational fishermen make a collective effort in standing together as a group, we can have sufficient numbers to justify us joining them in this project.

My motivation is a deep passion to make a difference, and a big regret that I never pursued my childhood dream of becoming a Marine Biologist:doh. If we have a lot of "Binnelanders" frequentily head for the coast, as well as the recreational coastal based fishermen,:sa: as I am sure we would be able to get, then surely this could help our chances.

I Proposes the forming of a group or network of anglers, to which the ORI will then supply these tags. These tags will then be administered and distributed from a centralised point to other parts of the country thus enabling everyone to make a difference, and therefore tag more fish...

I am not even sure if they will allow it,but you wont know if you dont try... If we can establish a group big enough, lets say to fish 250 or even 300 days of the year collectively, why would they then still refuse us to join in their project?

I am seriously not aiming to make waves, and do understand that they have limited resources which they need to allocate correctly in order to obtain the best results, hence why I am trying to make it worth their while by trying to make a collective effort and helping them in achieving their objectives.::prty:

Does anyone share this opinion, and would anybody be interested in joining such a program?

They dont give the tagging kits out to 'anyone' anymore because, statistically, 33% of all 'taggers' never even return 1 tag release form! Another 36% tag between 1 and 10 fish. Which leaves roughly 31% of all 'taggers' who are actually TAGGERS. Basically they dont want you wasting their time. If you dont live on the coast, you are wasting their time for 11 and a half months of the year.

Completely Understandable...

Hence why I am suggesting a centralised point for administration and distribution and this will also kurb the influx of chance takers, because it will be too much of a mission for them if they arent really committed to contribute effectively.

Tags will be distributed per person per trip or fishing session and all tags not used and info gathered will be accounted for and need to be returned to the central distribution point. The distribution point will also be giving all relevant info back to the ORI, including of unused tags.

This initiative is only for the person who takes this as seriously as I do, otherwise here is no point in even trying...

Do you think I have a chance of getting this off the ground?

Sure Megalodon, as long as you finance it and do the logistics im sure they wont mind. Or hows this, I'll rent out my tagging kit for a week at a time @ R500.;) ok in all seriousness, I understand what youre trying to accomplish, and im all for it, but personally, I dont think that ORI will think that it will be worth their while. Unless you perhaps organise a tag and release competition and ask them to supply you with tags? Thats the only way I can think of squeezing tags out of them any other way than actually becoming a full time tagger

Thanks for the imput guys.

Is the birthday bash in October a tag and release event? If not, why don't we get them involved in then sponsoring the tags
