they part of the Carangidae family of fish including amberjacks, pompano , mackarels and jacks. so a kingfish in them lol , Trachinotus falcatus is the latin name trachys, "rough", and noton "back" . species name for the permit, falcatus, is latin, roughly meaning "armed with scythes". This refers to the permit's dorsal fin that stick out of the water when they feed near the surface.

Howsit Eugene. well done . might be mistaken but that looks like more towards mirbat. The pommies love a white bucktail there. pink also not a bad colour. its all about your retrieve. Blue and white also not bad hey. will send you a pic of some prawn plastics we used there with great success too. stoked you got into the shad also. Hope you manage a buss soon! no black bream around? find that strange hey . again well done

Thanks guys, appreciate the messages.

@Frank, that's a beaut, I've got some catching up to do :)

@Scheeps, for spinning I have a Sensation Pro Series 9' rod paired with a Shimano Sustain 5000 and 30lb braid. For the permit I changed to a Quantum Cabo reel with 30lb mono, on the same rod. The change is necessary because the area is seriously foul with lots of mussel beds and sharp rocks. These fish are dirty fighters, so braid doesn't last more than a few seconds in that environment.

@Dingleberry & @Pslatarix, it was toward Mirbat side, off one of the marina piers. It's a real sweet spot with loads of permit. I'm trying hard to find one of those giant shad, but at the moment work's getting in the way...bw_l_)

@Pslatarix, funny thing about the bream - they're definitely around, I spotted a few quite close in but for the life of me I can't get them to eat anything! It's really starting to frustrate me, let me know if you have a fix for that please!

Forgot to mention, I also have a brand spanking new 12' Tiralejo and a Saragosa 8000 on the way from the US as I write this....

....can't help bragging a little, I can't wait to wet a line with that beast combination, next time I see the tuna close in I won't be reeling in anymore!;)

Hi Franc

Looking at the Permit in the pic, the colours and a bit of the Shape is diff to our one we catch along the Shores of SA which we call a Pompano. Can you please give the latin name of of the one in the pic. I would like to read up on it. Thanks.

Awsome catch bud,tough customers.

Trachinotus falcatus same family as pompano , but head is a bit more blunter and body wider and broader. permit much stronger because of the broader body.

Howsit Eugene. best thing for a black bream is a stick bait or popper hey. The small halco poppers and rapala skitter walks and sub walks are the go to lures. try more natural colours and white with chartreuse head.

Gentlemen, thank you for your sage advice. @Frank, I've never heard of this bent minnow, thanks a lot for sharing.

@Pslatarix, the problem here, as you know, is "so many fish, so little time..." But I admit it's a nice problem to have!
