Nice session

Went down to one of my favourite spots a couple of days back and had a pretty awesome day. Started fishing around 5am and found the shad (bluefish in these parts) out in force and landed 3 in my first three casts of the day, always a nice way to start...

The shad were all of a similar size, I measured one at 45cm, which is about average around here. Landed 6 in the end, all went back.

For the tackle minded gentlemen and ladies, the shad were taken on a sardine onda with no steel trace, Sensation Pro Series spinning rod and Sustain 5000 with 30lb Sufix braid.

Sorry for the poor quality photo, I was alone with my phone and I was rushing to get the fish back in the water.

Amongst the shad there were a lot of small (15 - 25cm) bigeye trevally, which was pretty annoying. It's quite amazing how aggressive these little guys are, I even landed one about the same size as the onda I was throwing!

The shad went quiet as the sun started showing and on my last cast for shad I was unpleasantly surprised to hook an undesirable new PB...a puffer...

As dawn broke I noticed some suspicious activity to my right and when the shad finally disappeared I went over for a closer look. I saw a school of maybe 20 large permit tailing in between the rocks no more than 10m from the side....viskoors.

Now I've battled these bad boys a couple of times in this particular spot and had my @ss handed to me every single time so far. The braid is simply not abrasion resistant and these fish are very, very dirty fighters in between the bricks. Knowing this I had come prepared and changed from my regular spinning rig to a quantum cabo that I'd spooled with 13kg Berkley mono (that's the only decent brand I can find here), which I hoped would give me a decent shot at landing one.

I tied on a home-made olive & white bucktail and carefully moved into casting position to avoid spooking the fish - they were literally in 2 feet of very clear water and tailing like crazy every time the waves receded.

I wanted to drop the bucktail a little bit behind the school and work it through the middle, but viskoors had other ideas and I landed the lure with a nice plop right on top of a decent looking permit. The fish duly scattered, taking a couple mates with it, but to my great surprise the rest of the school continued tailing like nothing happened.

I twitched the bucktail twice and felt the unmistakable steady pull of a permit...game on! What followed was a 20 minute tug-of-war as I tried to control a very strong fish trying like hell to cut me off on the mussel beds. These fish are insanely strong, definitely one of the hardest fighting fish I've ever hooked.

After a long, hard battle I finally managed to get the fish into a gap into a little gulley and lifted it out by its tail. By this time some German tourists had arrived to watch the sunrise and fortunately one of them understood my frantic shouts to help me take a pic.

The fish measured 67cm, no giant, but a new PB for me and one of my most memorable captures ever. After a quick photo session I spent a very long time standing waist deep in the water balancing on some rather precarious rocks trying to revive the fish, which had completely exhausted itself. Eventually the fish regained some energy and swam away in good shape, but not before a German guy had made a video of the crazy Saffa getting smashed by waver after wave....I'm sure it's on YouTube somewhere :)

Later in the day the lure fishing slowed down and I picked some perwinkles and limpets for bait. Had a blast with nice size blacktails and a few other species, like this sizer wave garrick.

On my way back I bumped into some friends on their way out, so I decided to stay a little longer...it was beautiful day and I reckoned why not.

After sunset they whipped out a grid and some charcoal and we made a fish braai right there on the rocks.

Fish braai next to the water, magic. We got a couple of rockcod and a croaker (local fish kind of like kob, but with big teeth; credit to Enigma who identified this fish for me first time I caught it) which made a beautiful dinner to finish off an awesome day. Can't wait to do it again.

Fish braai...

Thanks Blikkies and Ninja, it was a very memorable day's fishing. Sorry for the crappy photos, I was alone for most of the day and the phone doesn't take great pics when you're in a rush to measure, take a pic and release!

Ninja, the onda is a super effective lure, if you haven't tried it you really should. It's so effective it's almost embarrassing to use it...

As for the permit on the bucktail, that was a first for me and something I had wondered about before. Admittedly it was an unusual scenario where probably most tactics would have resulted in a hook-up, so the jury's still out on whether bucktails are good for permit or not. Anyone that would care to share their experience in this regard?
