Hi Guys,

I'm seriously interested in starting bass fishing but have no idea where to start. What kind of rod do i get? something affordable but will work well. What length do i get? do i go for a spinning reel or bait caster? I'm based in JHB so do i have to have a boat when it comes to bass fishing?

Please assist.^^..

Will appreciate any help i can get:)

Regards,

Howzit :welcomesea: now this will be strange but do you have a son? If so, go get yourself a not too expensive baitcasting setup with a Shimano Scimitar Medium 7ft length rod and a Shimano Crestfire baitcast reel. See if you like it, if you later wanna upgrade then (here's where the son question comes into play) then you can always pass the setup down to your son.

I personally would rather go for a decent setup right from the onset something like a Shimano Cumara 7,2ft Med rod with the Extra Fast action or the Quantum PT Energy 7ft Med rod, rig this with a Shimano Curado or a Quantum Smoke with a gear ratio of around 6,3:1, spool it with 10 -12 lb Flurocarbon, get some hooks, weights and lures and you're ready.

A good place to buy is Western Accesories in Boksburg, just of North Rand Road, Mia's in Woodmead, but if you're in PTA then Zambesi Angling in Montana would be my first choice and then Fisherman Pro shop in Lynwood and Anglking Africa in Centurion. The latter mentioned rod and reel setup should set you back in the vicinity of around 3k as opposed to the fisrt cheap alternative which should be around R900.

The latter however cannot be compared to the first but it is a good entry level setup that will give you the closest experience of the correct gear.

Hope it helps.

Thanx a mil:)

R3k a bit steep for me at the moment so will probably go for the cheaper option....not much choice:)

hehe, no son as yet....just me and my wife...will probably hand down to her as she enjoys fishing as well but not as much

anywhere in JHB central that you can recommend? i usually go to Solly's Angling

In my opinion you do need a boat to acces what has become "closed" areas for bank anglers. Maybe someone on sealine will be kind enough to take you for an "introductionary" bass fishing trip to Rhenosterkop dam and get you hooked on the little green fish!

Enjoy!:wfish
