Newbie in need of Advise

Hi guys, I go  fishing a few times a year and thought I know the basics but for the last year or two I have not really caught any fish. So I figured I must be doing something wrong and need help from the experienced as I really love fishing. So I have a few questions

NB: For now I am not interested in catching any particular type of fish. Any will do.

1. How should I setup my line weight at the end and hooks after ?
2. What bait should I use (for the vaal river) I know there is a lot of bait but just some basics.
3. Do I need to make feeding spots and must I use melie bomb spring all the time?

Please feel free to add other tips and tricks and also answer any questions I havent asked

Well it's all trial and error.

What works well at the Vaal is: Rietvlei strop.
FX
Caramel
Dynamite
Vaaldam
Basically almost everything sweet.

I always use a "bomb".

I hope this helps a bit.

That is fine , but a rietvlei workd much better. I also use to catch like that.

A Rietvlei is when you take your "bomb weight slider" (not sure about the correct name. That should be in the middle with a hook at the bottom and on at the top.

Here's a pic of my wife with a little carp on. Here you can more or less see the strop. I'll see if I can get a more clearer pic.

Nice drawing there SM. You can replace the spring with an m-shame sinker. And try to keep the hooklinks as short as possible (less than 10cm) and the not too big (size 2 daichi or smaller. You can make the top hooklink longer if you want to try for fish that dont feed of the bottom (like yellows). Use a nice big floatie to lift this longer hooklink thus targeting two species at once.

Its a mushroom sinker. Make the mieliebomb around the shank and the bottom part prevents it from falling off. I don't draw that well in Paint...lol!

I know exactly now what you were talking about. What is the advantage of this sinker?

Instead of having a big spring around your line, there is only this small sinker. Less stuff lying in between your feed and bait to scare off the fish. I myself don't use them that often, as its a bit tricky to get used to casting it. The most used size is M1.5. My bombs always fall off...hehehe! I do sometimes use a M2.5 which is quite big and I do get some fair distance with it. But if you can come right with the casting bit, bomb included, (practice makes perfect), you wont regret using them. The guys get over 100m casting a M1.5 with a bomb the size of a golfball. The quality and preparation of the mieliebomb is also very important, though. Not too hard or too soft. It needs to stick when casting, but break up quickly in the water to attract fish to your swim.

Our club will be having a clinic on casting and feed preparation and proper line/leader setup etc. Will share my experience with you guys afterwards. Hopefully I can learn something and pass it on.

I really wish some other guys would jump in and add to this post. Would be great to hear other viewpoints on this subject.

Thanks! I'll give them a try. I usually use the supercast bomb. I'll try it out and see if I can get it right.

What ever you learn there we'll definitly learn from you again. Thanks for all the advice! I agree. More okes to share would be nice.

My main line is 3.18kg Double X, with a 7 kg leaderline. Hooks daichi #1. I use a Sliding Rietvlei trace with the hookline lenghts of 10 - 12 cm. The shankline is 23 - 25 cm long.

I personally love to use the GLY RIETVLEI Same as the one S.M. is referring to but the top hook is gliding between the top swivel and the spring I use the spring with the weight in it.

Another   tip is if you make our Strop use Beats between your bottom Swivel and spring this help if you cast for your spring not to pull over your swivel I use fire line for the main stem and use thinner line for the hooks No.2 diachi is nice and top hook stem about 10 to 15 cm and bottom between 7 and 10 cm  I’m not artistic as you 2 but will try to draw pick and post it
