Hi

Going to be my first try at the freshwater bass fishing thing, and im taking along my light tackle rod and reel (6" grahpite with daiwa sweepfire, think its more for saltwater but i wanna try the whole bass thing before i buy new gear).

The 3 other mates of mine (none sealine members) will also be cluelees as this will also be ther first time.

So we have no idea what lures or bait to use, what we know from the area we found online and states:

mainly Smallmouth bass at the top end of dam, but a couple of largies around, a lot of the dam very deep, 45 - 100 ft, shallows produce well as well as lily pad areas

we have no clue what to use for bait or lure
^^.., please help
we want to make our hiking and fishing trip as fun as possible (6am - 3pm)

For a start, I would suggest some Crankbaits (Norman's DLN), "safety pin" -  type Spinnerbaits (1/4 - 3/8 oz), traditional in-line Spinners (Mepps No. 3) ...

On your spinning tackle which you are going to use, a weightless Fluke (Zoom Fluke) would also be appropriate (do a Google search for "double fluke rig") ... perhaps some 1/4 oz jigs and tubes, too ...

The small Saltwater "dropshot"-stuff would work as well ...

Try and speek to one of the locals that fish the dam often and hear from them what they are using. If not check out the thread on go to lures and choose lures for deep middle and surface.

Hey Muagie

I fished Groendal about 3 weeks ago and caught about 40 fish, but only in the early morning really. We had a lot of success in he morning with a tiny torpedo and crank bait and as it got later we started with plastic's.

The colours that worked well where dark colors with a schartruse tail black being the most effective. This however only worked when we where casting against the Cliff and to a limited degree on the banks.

As the sun got higher we found the a speed crawler in a a Green Pumpkin had some good results on the banks but it might have been due to the action as I did not have any success but one of my fishing partners did.

But as far as plastics go i would stick to worms in dark colors with nice bright tails.

If you go on the Boat ask Samual ( he is the driver) to take you to the half way point and then fish the cliff face on the right (that is if the dam wall is behind you) ask him to go dead slow and the throw your plastics right up against the wall let them sink for a few seconds and then retrieve them.

If you are using the crank baits cast them behind and in front of the boat and then bring them in so the they run against the wall this is where we caught most of our fish.

the other thing to remember it gets super hot out there so when it starts to hit midday the fish go int deeper waters and into the shade. The period between 12 and 2 was our worsts of the day we caught nothing but a serious sun tan.

The small mouth in that dam are very angry fish and seem to hit anything that moves.

here are some pictures of the stuff that worked:

good luck send me a PM if you want to know more
