To tackle a Garrick, you need a rod with a decent backbone...

7 ft Shimano Beastmaster; 9 ft Berkley Air are among the better ones

Reels...? Daiwa Exceler 4000E, Shimano Stradic 4000; Stella 4000 (R6000).

9ft Sensation passion stick and about a 3000 or 4000 Shimano or Daiwa Exceller. Shimano offer a wider range of spinning reels so you are more likely to find a Shimano to suit your budget. I'm not a Shimano man myself but the Slade seems to be well priced and gets good reviews. The Daiwa Exceller is good but I don't like their cheaper models. PLEASE buy the best you can afford as dropshot in the surf is HARD on your tackle.

They sold my wife the following :

1 x Berkley 9ft dropshot rod 1ounce cast weight.
1 x shimano Sustain 2500FE reel.

Any good ? Sounds good.
for kob, leeries and elf in the surf.

I would be itching to play with it.

I would most definitely try and convince the missus to allow me to open before Christmas, but hey its two days away. Maybe do what we do. Open gifts on Christmas eve at 12.00am.

I am no pro on drop-shot but that maybe a bit light?

What do the seasoned drop-shot anglers say?

Sound good to me!! Make sure you put braid on the reel to give you the required line capacity for the long casts you can make with a 9ft rod.

Yes, thats a fact. Sorry Wart, didn't notice 2500. When I see sustain my heart skips a beat and the world go blurry, like when you fall in love. A 4000 would be best for the rig.

That is a great setup and I'm sure you'll catch many great fish on it. I have a Sustain 2500i and fish from a boat with it. 5-10kg gamefish are no hassle. Have fun!
