HI guys

I'd like to share my latest pb with you all.
This is an extract from this report --> http://sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=92607&forum_id=71

We got to the end of the bank and decided that since it was so full of fish we should drift it again, so we drove up to the top and as we were drifting in to the shallows, a beast of a barbel came cruising past the back of the boat. Luckily I had my barbel dipping rod in my hand. I dropped the leadhead into the water in front of him and dropped it onto his whiskers just as he came under the tip of the rod. He didnt hestitate to inhale it - VAS!!!!!!

"DEAN ITS BIG!!"
"THOSE HIPPOS ARE BIGGER!!!!"

I looked up to see a pod of hippos had popped up about a hundred meters away from us. Two of them were cearly not happy and started blowing and grunting their way towards us.

Big barbel on the one end, hippos coming on the other... crap.

I had 100lb braid on so I knew the line wouldnt break and since it was a barbel I was fairly certain the hoiokup was solid.

OK lets get outa here!
Trolling motor full tilt, hippos behind us and a very angry barbel below us.... Needless to say I was holding on for dear life! The barbel was taking line at will, and even overtook the boat at one point! :)

Once we were clear of the hippos I was able to fight my barbel in peace. A while later, I dont recall how long, it was boatside. Dean managed to get the lipgrip in its mouth but he was struggling to get it up. I put down the rod and went to help him. Only once it was out of the water did we realize the scale of this thing. not only was it long (127cm) it was FAT!!!

It pulled the scale to a pb-smashing 16.8kg!! I dont think I will ever beat this pb (It should be noted that I dont consider the Vaal/Orange and 'Northern strain' barbel equal, since Vaal/Orange exceed 40kg's (some say 50) whereas in the rest of Africa you will find very very few over 20kg)

And here's the video, unfortunately my camera cut out on the big fish but still plenty action

thanks skuimkop! this guy was ridiculously fat, a real eating machine! But to be fair he did spit up a lot of green slime onto the deck, so I think he was eating on a scumline somewhere
