Went down to my local city dam for a quick fish.

Managed to catch my first vlei kurper for the season.

And then hooked into a 23mm male mosquitofish, beating my previous smallest by 5mm!

The male fish are significantly smaller than the females and have an elongated anal fin (gonopodium) used during mating.

I usually only catch the bigger, fatter females, so this was a
treat.

Used a tanago hook and extremely small fleck of white rubber lure.

Used a small, like in super-small piece of white rubber scrap from a Sada lure. Clipped with a nail clipper to be as 'round' as possible. Threaded onto hook so point of hook is just exposed, with lure not even past the barb.

Basically this is how I rig my lure on a tanago hook for catching the smaller mosquitofish.

The other lures are a small Lume Lures spider, small Sada curly and small Sada ball (smallest soft lure I know of) for size comparison. (My camera takes crappy macro photos.)

The smaller mosquitofish go for the Sada ball, but simply swim around with it without getting hooked.

Still trying to get my hands on Powerbait so I can roll proper round micro balls.
