Got this via email so please do not shoot the messenger. For some it is commmon knowledge out there and for others not.

Dear Stakeholders,

In line with the National Protected Area Expansion Strategy (NPAES, 2008), the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) intends re-zoning the Betty’s Bay and Robberg Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and re-zoning and re-aligning the Goukamma Marine Protected Area in the Western Cape Province. This will affect where recreational fishing and diving are allowed in the Betty’s Bay and Robberg MPAs and where all forms are fishing are allowed in the Goukamma MPA. A stakeholder participation process is being run in accordance with requirements published in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act (Act 18 of 1998) and the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (Act 57 of 2003) to enable Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) to provide comment on this process. I&APs are encouraged to register as stakeholders in this process and to attend public meetings to be held at the localities and dates indicated below:

MPA Venue Date Time
Goukamma MPA Royal Hotel conference venue, Knysna 20 March 2014 17h30-19h30
Robberg MPA N.G. Kerk, Plettenberg Bay 21 March 2014 10h00-12h00
Betty’s Bay MPA Crassula Community Hall, Bettys Bay 27 March 2014 18h00-20h00

I will always support the creation of MPA's and no take zones if it can be enforced like in New Zealand. My only problem is that what is the point of creating them when you can't police them. Just look at the Strand as an example. I can guarantee you that there will be at least 4-5 shark poaching boats in the Strand MPA tonight and no one will lift a finger to catch them. With the implementation of the Small Scale Policy the MPA's will in anyway become subsitance zones which will mean that there will be more fish outside the MPA than inside the MPA!

Am I correct in saying that the effect of the Goukamma extension would be that the area from what we know as Garies/Back of Lake Pleasant will become out of bounds for fishing?

Hi Strepie

WWF is telling a subtle but clever lie.

They say that they are obliged to extend MPA's in terms of a national policy to extend them but they play with the definition of an MPA.

Any area of heightened protection is an MPA. So an area like False Bay (which is protected but is not an MPA) should be included in looking at how much is protected and how much is not.

This all makes actual sense??
Does not make a big difference to goukamma but robber issue is not us but the seals!

Jip that seems to be correct. Do not understand why we will not be allowed to collect washed out red bait around buffalo bay as is the current practise....

Kap toe, die ANC wil small scale fisher rights uitdeel vir votes....

Want nie lank nadat die MPA's geproklameer word nie gaan hulle exclusive take zones raak vir small scale fishers....

Hi Marthin

WWF has earmarked Kogelberg for small scale fishers.
