New mask

Hi All

I have recently purchased a new mask ......much to my detriment. The dam thing keeps misting up , i have tried tooth paste , burning the inside lens , spit and sea weed too no avail, help please .

Tuna, the trick is to spit the inside lens when it is still DRY, smear it well with Dry hand then rinse. Once you have it on your face DO NOT BREAK THE SEAL. I never move or remove the mask until after the dive and it works like a bomb. Removing and putting it on your head and back on your face is disastrous.

I feel your pain bro. There are very few things in this world that gets my blood boiling like a mask that keeps fogging up. I recently bought a top of the range quality brand diving mask and had the same problem. Drove me insane.

New diving masks have residue left over from the manufacturing process coating the lens. It is a very thin oily layer much like an oily smudge from a finger print on your favorite sunglasses. Unless you remove this coating from the inside of the lens, the mask will constantly fog up no matter what you try.

This layer can be removed quite easily and I did the following.

• I burned the inside of the lens briefly with a lighter. You can actually see the oily film burn away. make sure to get those corners near the frame as well and just light it briefly, you dont want to melt the lens.

• There after i gave it a good wash with warm water and dish washing detergent again making sure i got all the corners good and no oily film left.  [/*]
• Rubbed the inside with toothpaste and a drop of water. The purpose of this is the toothpaste works as a very fine grinding compound that helps clear the oily film so you have to make sure you rub it down thoroughly.[/*]
• Rinse out and dry. Then used the cleaning cloth from my Ray Ban sunglasses and polished the lens till it felt free of any oily layer or grease.[/*]

• An lastly the trick i swear by most and can not go diving if i haven't done this!! I take a potato with on the boat. Just before i enter the water i cut a small piece and rub the inside of the goggles thoroughly with the piece of moist potato. Sounds ridiculous but it works beyond belief, all my dive buddies now use the same method. If you cleaned your lens properly and used potato before going in the water you can rinse the lens in the water even and it still wont fog up.

All these tips and tricks all aim at one thing.. to get rid of that damn oily layer. The starch in the potato on a clean lens keeps it from fogging. I hope this sorts your troubles out.

Yes Toothpaste and Potatos work and its cheaper.

Gents,
This advice only works on glass lenses.
Take a bit of soft cloth, moisten with Benzine. Wipe down the inside of the lense covering into the tight corners for about 2-3 minutes. Rinse with running water.
Smear lense now with about 5ml toothpaste and scrub properly for another 2-3 minutes. Rinse under wam running water removing all signs of toothpaste.
Then let the lense dry naturally to remove odours of both toothpaste and benzine. Could affect and irritate your eyes if not left to air.
Prior to use every time simply apply a bit of saliva to the dry lense and rinse with water thereafter.
Fogging issues would now be permanently solved.

toothpaste all the way, preferably the white kind. trick is to rub it for a long time, don't just rub it in there and swish it around, work it with your thumbs for 5 minutes like you're polishing it. once i learned that, no more fogging.

Baby shampoo it before dive rinse out lightly leaving bit shampoo - no problems - best defogger money can buy - throw bottle in your dive bag.

I agree with the last post. J&J Baby shampoo. just a small droplet. smear with finger and rinse. shake off excess water and fit mask. Don't touch lens after rinsing. you will see for miles and hours.

Exactly what we use offshore on our commercial masks/ hats. What you can do is boil down the baby shampoo until you have a waxy blob and just dab the tip of your finger on the blob and coat your mask and no more fogging!

have you tried purging your mask underwater?

I used to dive a lot in my younger days, spit, tooth paste if that don't work purging mask under water usually helps

Bought a glass lensed mask a few years ago. Fogged up badly, so i burned it (as there is a protective film on the inside and outside of the lens of the mask.

Then Toothpaste overnight.
No problems after that.

Five years later, what worked?

Mate of mine has the same issue, but I don't think it's a glass mask so not sure about burning it?
