What I found after a couple of hours on the water ...............

GPS Receiver – 4 x Faster

The first and most important feature for me was the refresh rate of the charts.  At 4 times per second combined with the 50 channel 1 meter accuracy, this unit is second to none.

Approaching and targeting waypoints and trails are an absolute dream with the new 4.700 update.

SwitchFire:-

How often have you gone to set the sensitivity on your Humminbird and only to find it was already maxed out without it becoming too cluttered.  With the new SwitchFire, you have more sensitivity control than you’ll know what to do with.  Identifying small organisms in the water and thermoclines has just become a lot easier than ever before.

In these screenshots below, the top image has the tree tops missing completely, even with the sensitivity set right up.  But in the image below, the SwitchFire is on Max.  The tree tops become visible without over cluttering the image.

New 2D Palettes:-

The new palettes are really nice with the combination of white blue or black backgrounds, effectively giving you an extra nine options.

These are the 3 palettes with a white background.

New SI Palettes:-

There are 3 new palettes, with the most striking being the Amber 1 in 800kHz – Awesome!

In conclusion, all we need now is the Down Imaging and a mapping system compatible with DrDepth – Life would then be complete!

Hey Fishton,
I know you are a Lowrance Guru and always swore by their product...
Given the new technology from Humminbird, wich do you now prefer on your boat in terms of combo units? Ignoring price now, considering the average ski boat, so looking at the HDS-5, 7, 8 and equivilant in Humminbird and possibly other manufacturers.

It would be nice to get a comparison from the expert (you), but since we don't all have access to use of all the units, perhaps you could do something for us. Maybe some sort of star rating for price, sonar, gps, ease of use, screen etc.

You got the time?

Cheers
Bennie

Hi Bennie,

I have always been a big supporter of the following products:-

Lowrance for recreational charts and mapping
Humminbird for recreational freshwater, estaury and coastal fish finding
Garmin for street maps and international Nautic Navigation
Furuno for commercial deep >900ft shoal fishermen and military use

So much has happened with Lowrance and Humminbird in the last couple of months, I can barely keep up.  You've got Lowrance doing what Humminbirds used to do and Humminbirds doing what Lowrance's used to do.

So right now, if you have the money, you need a Lowrance HDS10 and a Humminbird 1197.

If things are a bit tight, go for the HDS5 and the 798cxSI - you WILL catch more fish!
