NEW Fishing MAG for SA

I met the Editor of a new exiting mag that's coming to SA in May.

We had a long conversation about the current Mags available for us fisher men / /woman in South Africa.

Considering all the mags available - he asked me how in touch these mags are with anglers in SA and if these mags are simply only catering for the higher income earning anglers......

to be honest - I'm not sure - what do you think?

Also - I told him about this cool site and that there tends to be a lot of participation on topics and said I would add this for him :

If you had a wish list of what you wanted to see on the SA fishing  / boating front - what would it be?

Let me know.

What is the magazine going to be aimed at R&S/ paswaai/ Specimen / Artlure / Flyfishing/ DObba DOBBA / deep sea/ DRop HSot etc

I think the magazines are very broad based - There are magazines for the high income earners such as The Complete Flyfisherman and ESA. Then the Stywe Lyne caters for the more main stream and is more broad based. There are also many other publications on the market at present (and many of them are specailised - FLY/specimen/etc.

My question is will there be enough new info to keep writing about for "another magazine" I ask this as a writer myself?

For me I find a website such as this way more interactive than a magazine (but again this is just me personally)

@Ryan - By the way - nice articles there in the SL a very good read a(and nice fish) if I might add.

@Karamatix: I only read 2 mags (religiously)
1) The Bank Anger
2) ESA
3)

Reason they specific to either Flyfishing,Salt and Freshwater.

Then Bank Angler is also starying to move a bit towards covering a broad array of freshwater facets. Problem - I then buy the mag for only 10 pages that are relevant to me.

I only bought the SL this month cos of Ryan's article and would probably buy it next month for the Doorndraai BFC's

I tend to agree with Ryan on the website comment. Far more informative - the thing is we need to get the top notch guys involved in these forums to get some credability to topics - like a Loutjie Louies, Hennie Du Preez etc.

Untill then we will only share what is working for us and not get to know what works for the no 1 and 2 guys is SA.

Thanks Jacques.

I also believe that there is only so much one can write about a certain topic before the readers grow tired of the subject material as Jacques has indicated the Bank Angler is starting to vary it's information base.

It is very much the same case with the bass magazine's they can only write so much about subjects and you will already start seeing that more and more of the magazine content is becomming more geared towards venues.

Anyways please feel free to ask your aquaintance to join sealine and fire away the questions...........

I think with these type of web forums as opposed to magazine articles it is near impossible to ask an author where and exactly how he caught that particular fish - where as in here it can be done. And in the case of magazine articles information is entirely up to the discretion of the writer as to the content of detail and I hasten to add there is only so much that you can write in a 3000 word article withpout your readers becomming bored to tears.

ANyways I wish your mate the very best of luck with his venture.

Hi Guys,

I have to agree with the last point made by Jaques, I've been reading stywe lyne for at least the last 10 - 11 years and have become increasingly disappointed. They used to have some really good articles but lately, I feel as if I've just got the mag for lack of anything better.

Not to take away from any of the writers now writing (Ryan whose last article I enjoyed, not knowning that the writer was part of this forum), but the content of the magazine has become increasingly disappointing. You wait a month, and then read for 30 - 40 minutes ( which would probably be 15 minutes if my Afrikaans was better or if all articles were English :lol:1)and that's it. As I result thereof, I've now subscribed to the Bank Angler. I'll still continue my Stywe Lyne subscription though.

What I'd really like to see are more articles on fishing destinations, as the one about Jim Fouche in this months issue. With decent directions and pics of the accomodation and the amount of shoreline available.

A really solid technical secton would also be appreciated, for conventional and speciman fishing as bass and fly and salt water seem well covered.

In addition, perhaps we need a truly bi lingual mag which explains technical aspects of articles in both English and Afrikaans. My Afrikaans is ok, :doh but I do get lost with some of the technical terms. I then usually have to ask someone at work to explain. I don't think the appreciate that.

:eek:tp:: I enjoy Jim FOuche as a weekend destination but have had no luck there, 2 fish in about 6 -7 trips. Which baits work well there ?

Piscator - good come back:clap12

I have no claim to being a fantastic writer I write cause I want to help people out there as even the so called "Pro's" are tight with their information as to "how, what, when and where."

SL has a huge problem in english article submissions and quite often I get calls from Ettienne to submit more material - there are many people that fish but there are few that are willing to sit down and put pen to paper.

I have very much the same problem as you - I am Zimbabwean born and bred so as you can imagine my "Taal is very delicious" I agree that there is not enough english info in our magazines on conventional and specimen fishing in South Africa - but I believe that so called "papswaai" has very much and Afrikaaner conitation attached to it in this country - Please don't get me wrong there are many "Engelse" that take part in conventional and specimen but how many of them actually contribute towards our national publications? Maybe Oom Jacques should writing more english articles on conventional and specimen for our mags as he definately has the gift reading his posts on Sealine.

I write for various magazines but I have never subscribed to any of them - reason being is that I go into the shops and window browse through the magazine before buying it as you have stated some month's it is just not worth buying the magazine due to the lack of content - but hey this is me personally. I have a preference for the SL as it is a broad based magazine and is also to a degree national where most of the other magazines are just directed at one facet of fishing or to one geographic location.

I find that all mags go through a cycle of really good articles and then very average ones and so it goes on.....

With reference to Jim Foche suggest you post a new thread in the Carp section as I'm sure there are other guys that are also wanting to find out more about Jim Foche 10 to 1 Jacques will be one of the first guys to respond to your post - it also makes it a hang of a lot easier for guys searching for info to find.

Thanks Piscator for your comments - another article in Next month's magazine in English Just for you too "Catching carp on the spawn" (Artlure article also in the SL)

Tight lines and I hope you resolve your blank problem at Jim Foche........:ssswim:

Thanks Ryan,

I think if I have to ask my secretary to explain another Afrikaans SL article, she's going to fire me ! Having magazines in both languages obviously appeals to a larger reader base, just make it simple enough not to exclude either English or Afrikaans speakers.

Also, the thing I like the most about this forum is that okes are willing to share. What some okes don't realise is that if we religiously practice catch and release and look after all our fish, not just speciman carp, there'll be enough fish for everyone.

Sorry sent too soon, Oom J, if you stumble across this, I agree with Ryan, your article on how to start speciman angling was fantastic. It made me want to order a bakkie and start making chum. In anyevent it did get me to register for the Donaldson session on the 22nd. :clap12

Yo Ryan, :clap12

Fantastic article on the spwaning carp in this month's sl::tight:. I must admit though, I would've probably been one of the 'dissappointed papgooiers' on the bank.

Great read and great fish:wfish. Any chance of you divulging which dam had these good fish ?:babee

Fish Look Great, Author looks ok. Just kidding, pics are not as good as the Bloemhof ones which were exceptional pics, you seemed to get not only the anglers and the fish but also the essence of the dam, really made me long for Bloemhof.

The pics were good.
