NEW COMPETITION RULES

First question is Why?

Simply to align our angling with the Internationally accepted norms of FIPSed

Why

If we are aligned they will approve our angling rules under the FIPSed and publish our Zone 6 tournaments on the world Calendar

What does this mean

SASCOC (SA Sport and Olympic Commission)will award Protea colours for our Zone 6 tournaments as they will meet the SASCOC Tournament requirements for awarding of National Colours

The rule changes are in essence derived to consider fish care and consideration of fellow anglers

These rule changes have been under development and discussion at numerous forums and I had opportunity to attend a recent session and make some recommendations.

Final deliberation and presentation for Approval with be at the SAFBAF AGM end of May

Rule Changes 1

no angler will enter the water deeper that knee deep for any reason this is accordance with the international standards and is on the premise of Safety

Rule Changes 2

The bank will be pegged in 30m blocks.

10m no-mans land, 10m angling area, 10m no mans land. You are allowed to fish inside the central 10m area. You are to fish, fight and land your fish inside that 10m. If your fish ventures outside the 10m left or right and if it picks up your neighbours line (20m to your left or right) then it will be disqualified.

This is to stop anglers purposefully or accidently disrupting their neighbours lines or swims. This is intl standard.

Rule Changes 3

Nets for landing and weighing fish must be knotless and competition anglers will be afforded a 2 year period to implement this

Rule Changes 4

Point allocation system. To minimise handling of fish the point allocation will change from 10 points per fish over 150gr and 10 points per kilo

to

5 points for any fish meeting the ordinance requirements or SAFBAF requirements ie all kurper 15cm and 10 points per kilo.

This means all fish will be counted and weighed.

To avert whip fishing for tiny species the rules will stipulate:

i. a rod must be fitted with a reel
ii. the trace must be fitted with weight and a float may not be used

Weigh in's will take place at scheduled intervals through the day ie 9, 12 and 15:00

So after all the rumours of restricted line diameters and doing away with leaders etc, these are some facts and will surely be ratified at the AGM

Just for interest sake. We already fish the restricted to 10m swim in the Competition Carp angling and I have till now not been able to not keep a carp or barbel inside my swim to land it even if I was fishing 0.18mm line

The logic would be that with standard competition target fish you can fish light to get the required distance, just as long as you keep your fish in your swim.

Should one be getting bigger fish such as in Darlington the one would have to upgrade line and hooks to better control the fish but I would still probably have fished 0.18 with 0.8 hooks because going heavier on line would cost distance = no bites and bigger hooks would equal less pickups.

Just 2 quick questions that springs to mind.
1. Are these rules for conventional bank angling or the new feeder angling? My understanding is that feeder angling would be an additional facet (so we then have 4 freshwater facets).
2. Who's going to police each swim to see if your fish ventures out of your 10m area? With conventional you will have double the amount of anglers and pegs (12 anglers per team to the 6 of the carp/specimen guys).

Thank you for the info.

Question: Will the fish be safe in just knee deep water. Lets say I catch 70 fish (I wish), wont it harm them to only be restricted to knee depth?

I might be missing something, but would like to find out.

I have never had to net fish in water deeper than knee-deep. Luckily I have a long handle on my net...

JPS, as I understand it, conventional will be moving over to feeder fishing to enable us to participate in the international arena on a conventional/feeder level (as per the editor of Bank Angling magazine). Basically the only thing that i different is the knotless nets and apparently the space we will be fishing in.

Enigma, what about the unhooking mats that we discussed a while back?

Guys this is posted under the Conventional angling section.

It is applicable to the Bank Angling facet and not the Carp or Feeder facet. these have rules of their own. My intro also explains why it is being changed.

Currently our comps are pegged 40m per 2 pegs in future it will be 60m.

Anglers with the assistance of the officials will police the crossing of boundaries. If you've done match or carp fishing you will know you don't need an official to police it.

You fight your fish fro where you stand and bring it to you. As soon as you move out of your swim your fish is DQ'd. I am for sure going to complain and call the officials attention if you let your fish into my swim and drag my lines.

It's not a massive change and it's easier than you think to control the fish if you have to. We as SA anglers follow our fish to easily.

Yes if you pick up a train of a Barbel on 5lbs line you've got a problem and you can't wander off for a km to land it.

If you target bigger fish or barbel you'll have to scale up accordingly.

I can however say that at a Match fishing Nationals I fished at Bloemhof we fed with choopped liver in the feed and fished snake worms on a #5 Daiichi and 15lbs braid on match rods and we landed a number of 10-15kg Barbel and in Match fishing your swim is only 10m

Post 7 is the answer. Fish will be weighed at least 3 times a day 9,12 and 3 and if yo are catching 70 fish every 3 hours I'm sure they'll institute hourly weight in's.

No Bank Angling will not be moving into Feeder fishing.

Feeder fishing will be a facet on it's own. Remember this is Eu based fishing style and focuses on many different species of fish.

In feeder fishing you may only fish with Maggots, Worms and Bloodworm no past baits are allowed and it is basically pole fishing but floats are not allowed. So for RSA to achieve Intl success will be limited as we only have Carp and Yellowfish that are similar to the Feeder fishing target species in Eu

Feeder fishing you will target

Rudd, Roach, Tench, Bleak, Mullet, SilverCarp, Pike, Perch, Crucians etc, etc

Feeder fishing is Feeder fishing and Bank Angling is Bank Angling

During the transition and growth of the feeder facet (I doubt it'll get big, will be much the same as Match although tackle is cheaper)The anglers competing in Bank angling championships will be invited to trial for the Match Angling Protea team.

The first 5-8 Protea teams will compete at World Champs in Europe and that is once again a R50k exercise with travel, accommodation and bait etc, etc.

Feeder fishing will be run as an individual facet in SA so Bank angling will consist of

Comp Carp Angling
Match Angling
Feeder Angling
RSA conventional Bank Angling (Tri Nations Angling)

Naruto. If you unhook your fish on the bank a wet unhooking mat is needed

We are targeting younger fish so a home made 3cm thick soft foam covered with a smooth soft material would be more than adequate.

I personally would advocate that weather it becomes a rule or not that it be used.

I however unhook all fish up to 5kg at my keepnet and drop them in the net before coming out, all you're doing if you unhook fish on the bank is waste fishing time. (Out, unhook, back to net and return fish and back to rods) as much as 15-20minutes timed if you're catching 90 fish in a day.

If you convert 20-30 minutes to fish when they are biting at their best it could be 4-6 fish and the difference between 1st and 4th, not to mention the extra 1km you walk around in the mud.

Thanks, so I can still use my existing setup: Keepnet stand with landing net holders.

And thanks for clearing up the confusion on feeder fishing.

Thanks for all the info enigma.

How many of our dams would be able to accomidate the new size of the angeling areas?

Remember at provincial level we'll fish within our own household rules which will be a hybrid to accomodate our angling.

We'll fish our trials at a place like the Vaal where we will be able to apply the rules to the letter.

Currently Arabie could host the compo in strict accordance to the rules but we'd have to do the Seniors over 2 days and the Ladies and Juniors on another weekend

We're currently through Dean getting access to a great dam in the Nyl which would accommodate this.
