I have never really understand this!

In my humble opinion its not practical?

I agree, not very practical. Most guys have chart-plotters these days - but it can fail you if it brakes down or battery runs flat. I had a chart of False-bay laminated and keep it on standby if the surveyor ask for it...

Some have asked for it in the past !!!

But I suppose a chart / gps plotter does not excuses the verbatim charts to be onboard?
