I just can not believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are no Natal anglers here doing spininning or dropshot!!
Majority posts are from the Cape guys. Must be that the fish moved to the Cape because there are more bait in the water and they guys there are prepared to catch them!!!!!!!!

We have been too busy catching flat fish to do any spinning.
Yes we do a lot of spinning but mostly in the winter months around sardine time. In the summer the water is generally too dirty on the lower South coast.

I will be going to Margate in June/ July school hollidays for a week and want to try it. I have got rod and reel with line and thats all. I need to get spinners and whatever I need to use down ther.I might fly or drive down there for a week with the wife and daughter.
So hopefully somebody can help me down there. I will be hunting a lot for some biltong and dry wors as well and must check my dates.

I dont think its a matter of no one doing spinning for species, Its more a matter of no one really posting more regular feedback & or experiences they have had after a trip.
There are many guys doing dropshot, spinning/plugging etc , "coutakoppie, zuluxtreme, nemises, just to mention. I think its more a preference of targeting specific species by the individual , depending on the time of the year.
I love my plugging for GT/garrick, dropshot from surf , esp estuaries , crankbaits, topwater lures in estuaries & rivers, spinning for shad/GT's - its huge fun.
Tugela,Amatikhulu river , Mtunzini basin & Richards Bay harbor produces good results with dropshot , lures , while spinning & plugging yield great fish at various spots on the North coast.

I live in Margate so keep in touch and ill be happy to give you advice regarding lures, spots, conditions and species.
June, july is an excellent time to be throwing lures down here. Put in the effort and you are bound to come right.

Thanks for the replies. I have X2 10 foot rods with one coffe grinder. The rod tips can handle 3oz lures.
Now if you dont mind me asking, what lures or what should I get to use for spinning?
I am very dumb with this as it is my first time I am going to try it. I got the kit from my wife for my birthday 2 years ago! Ans still have not used it. Still in the box with no line on it and the rods still in the tube!!
I do rock and surf when I get the time when we go down to the coast. I am no fundi but I try and enjoy it. I actually do kite surfing but have not done it for some time.
When I fish rock and surf I sling bait. Never slid a bait yet. I have a surf rod that can be used for slides.
I do appreciate your help and hope we can get some more Naatal guys or inland guys to join and give advice.
Now you guys started a tickle again and I cant wait to get to the sea again. I just have a few hunts to do for some biltong and dry wors for the rugby season!! I am a Shark supporter!!

No problem - I know that on the South Coast you should enjoy yrself with Straightstick during the sardine run(lets hope we have a good Sard.run this year), with an abundance of species around, shad, salmon,garrick, the odd couta from the side & the lovely part is you can rather use lures than baiting up the whole time. You can cover a larger area quicker whilst spinning/plugging. Gamefish galore on the South coast from the rock & surf.
I enjoy lure fishing alot & it gets the adrenalin pumping with each catch - the "take" is unbelievable , be it a perch of 500g on a 6ft rod or a garrick of 10-15kg, or GT on medium outfit ...........it remains huge fun. Then the gogga really bites you , (& hold on to yr wallet now) & you start buying different lures in different colours , different weights , then its this rod & reel combo for this specie, or plugging & this combo for this specie or lures, & so the craze gets hectic. Before you know , you have stock the size of a decent tackle shop........ I have seen some pics of fellow Sl's collection wrt their collection of lures ,wow just amazing, then I dont feel bad when I STILL CONTINUE to buy another one or three when I pass a tackle shop......
I will post info on some of my favorite lures, spots etc , but do yrself a huge favor & search under the different Topics/Sub Topics for lure angling, under the DIY section to equip yrself with a huge amount of info already available on the type of lures/rods/reels/lines/leaders etc.
The shad & garrick season on the KZN coast for 2012 was a great to state it mildly. It was one of the best seasons on the KZN coast - So much that the odd garrick is still being caught.
The 2011 garrick season saw garrick being caught till February of 2012.
Then GT season starts up in the warmer months with a variety of other species which can be targeted with lures.
Lets see how far this goes ................

Thunder, rather wait until you are here before you buy any lures. Local knowledge is key and the guys at Gremlins and Tacklebox are very helpfull. Contact me when you get here and ill introduce you to them.

I have the 2 spinning rods 10" and grinder with no line on yet.I also have a Poseidon 3XH with a Daiwa Saltist 50 sh for the bigger boys.
I have met Porkhead down there but only the last day before leaving.
I would like to do some fishing but also have time with the family. So I think early morning would be best for the fish and during the rest of the day I can have time with the family.

That tackle should be perfect, try to get some braid on that grinder.
I presume you met porkhead on orange rocks, that's where I do most of my fishing. Maybe we can hook up and wet a line.

You must hang on to yr Toby spoons - they are worth gold. Excellent for shad early morning late afternoon, esp in the foamy waters where shad prey & ambush on baitfish.
The later it gets after a morning, fishing tends to go off the bite for various reasons , one being the brightness/heat (water temp) of the day, & also sends fish off to swim & hunt & feed during low light conditions, but as it gets dimmer in the late afternoon , shad & garrick will start hunting actively again - the same for early mornings.
Temprature plays an important role - to hot or to cold & the fish will not play the game , correct temp & they can go from feeding to feeding frenzy !!
