Natal Snoek

For those of you who haven't heard  -  the snoek are thick from Blue Lagoon northwards - mainly in front of the Hypermarket, with most boats/skis getting good catches - use sard fillets for best results.

The fish have mostly been on the small side 1-2kgs but are getting bigger with a few of 4-5 kgs caught yesterday.

dugongboy, i fish mainly in the bluff area but want to start exploring new areas.

I've got a popes ski, where do you guys launch from.

I've been warned not to launch at blue lagoon, apparently the rock and surf fishermen cast at you???????????????

True or not??????????

Anyway, a mate and i want to target snoek this weekend and it looks like sunday is out because the winds going to be pumping.

So where to launch?

Is it best super early in the morning or do they hammer you all day?

I fish from a ski boat but there is no problem at Lugs for skis (as far as I know). You may have to launch/beach a bit further down the beach.
Go early and pull fillets but late afternoon is also good.
From the river pull north up past the Hyper an back.

Check the snoek trace I submitted in Sealine FAQ's - traces & rigs - they are excellent for skis as you can make 4 or more up at once and be ready for action - you can even make them the night before.

Shot dugongboy, i nailed 3 snoek ranging between 3-4Kg on saturday. The only downside was the hoards and hoards of skiboats and fishing ski's out there, unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it.

Fished yesterday for snoek - very slow, only a few were boated between about 25 boats, loads of silkies destroying baits, got a small garfish - I got no snoek but had fun at the Caissons catching shad(30+) on bucktail jigs and dropshot.
Also got quite a few catfaces in the 1-2kg range on 2oz bucktails - all released.

What is the likelihood of picking up snoek from the beach? What is the best approach... Will they take spoon? A fresh Sard Fillet?

GW if you fish in front of the hyperama, the guys are nailing the snoek anything from 20m from shore to 80m from shore.

I suggest you throw a small lure (onda onda) and work the beach.

Although I have caught plenty snoek from a Ski boat I have never caught a snoek off the beach but know guys who have and the general consensus is that to target Snoek from the beach the conditions have to be right - generally flatish seas and fish inbetween the banks in deeper water, a full tide at sunrise is probably the best time and use biggish sprat spoons (for distance) or as MichaelK said you can't go wrong with an onda.
