Naby-Kolhengel VS. Afstand

My vraag is as volg?

Carp hold on Thermoclines and the larger carp in the most dams are found in 4-8m of water in daylight hours so if you want to catch bigger fish

Deep Water fishing

Long line fishing

Having the perfect bait 100m away from the fish will not get bites but the wrong bait amongst the fish will get the bites and the right bait at the right depth will get the fish

In short the distance from the bank is less important than the depth of water you are fishing in (99%) of the time.

It all has to do with the temperature of the water and the deeper it is the cooler it is, this is ideal for carp which are temperate climate fish and they love 14-18 degree water.

Also the temperature fluctuations in deep water are less than in shallow water and being cold blooded the bigger fish adapt slower to water temp changes so they will keep in deeper water in the day and as the water over the feeding grounds cools at night they will move in closer

this explains why cast baits get bigger fish at night than they do in the day

Ek dink vir kompeterende hengel is kolgooi belangriker.

Hi Brakkanjan,

Ek het eenkeer 'n kompetisie by Steyns gevang waar 'n karpie so groot soos my hand 'n groterige Daichi hoek met twee Vaaldam pitte gevat het. Kleintjies eet enige iets.:wfish

i agree with Jaco-Jaco and Enigma said

temp and depth and water clarity and structure and ground/bottom composition and comp for food, all play a part, some more important then others.

fish feed where they are used to getting/seeing food, where they feel safe, where natural food occurs. they dont just swim around all over the place, they stay in their safe zones.

the compositon of the bottom is important as from this you then know how to present your rig/bait what bait to use etc.

water clarity is also important as the sunlight can only penetrate a few meters under the water depending on the clarity. plants and organisims need light to grow and live. plants grow act as food for fish and home to bugs etc, fish eat bugs etc. you starting to see the picture

we could go on about each aspect for hours and each one has its own importance and relevance. the bottom line is find the fish, structure, safe zones and present the right bait in the right way, etc and you will have a gr8 session.

thats just my 2cents

If you giuys want to read something realli interrestiing, go to the bass section and the the sticky about fishing the channels in a body of water. I think it holds true for most venue and fish: http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=26855&forum_id=32

The reason the bigger carp hold to routes is that the water temps remain rather constant

It is also for this reason when all of a sudden in certain times of the year, normally late April to end May that many more large carp are caught at casting range in venues where they are normally scarce.

The rerason for this is that with the water cooling on the surface there is a point of equilibrium where the margin water is similar tin temp to the deep water so the change in temp is minimal bringing the larger fish into casting range and in all hours of the day and not only at night.

If you think about this you'll soon realise this is why Rietvlei in May delivers many good fish as with the Vaal in casting range.....

I agree fully that in competition that kol is important but with the change in rules a 2kg carp is worth 4 small carp or 4 small muddies so the idea of fishing points changes and this was totally evident in the GN leagues where guys with 5 fish took out bags of 9-12 fish and this in the Vaal

The Munt club absolutely dominated the league season and their full strategy was big fish and their bags average 1.4kg a fish in many cases giving them a monster advantage

I saw it at the Nationals this year my average was over 1.2kg a fish and every day I beat guys with as much as a 40% better total of fish but not the weight

Enigma,

I agree with the fact of water temp....makes sense and will def be remembered apon next excursion...:)

All the info though are applicable to dams...right..? What about flowing water, like the Orange river bordering SA and Nam....? We catch big Carp here....last year the ave weight was about 5.5 kg with the biggest being 11.05 kg. ( PB was 8.00kg) But not a high amount like you would be catching in dams per occasion.

According to you, how do you differenciate where your flow of "climate perfect" water for the carp would be and do you think the best area is in the edge of the flowing water or at the shallower still water?

Enigma:
How will I then go about catching bigger fish when my average is only about 700gr?
1. Do I take time during the comp to cast out my depth measuring float or do I just cast as far and hard as I can, assuming that the water further out is actually the golden 4mtrs mentioned above?
2. Do I sort of adapt a specimen/carp angling baiting approach..
