My OLD, NEW BABY

My little Junebug. Cannot wait to get her out!

Guys I am new to bass boats and outboards still waiting to take her out. I have a question about my old 55hp mariner outboard. the motor has a clip that is linked to the gearbox via a rod and it clips onto the bottom of the motor mount. Logic tells me that this device is for when you reverse it stops the motor from lifting out of the water. Is this correct? The reason I ask is that this rod linking the gearbox to the mount is loose and rattles around (clearly not connected or doing anything). How neccasary is it, and how much PT is it to fix. Bearing in mind I can Fix almost anything myself. Anyone with or who has a link to a PDF manual for such an outboard would be of great help to me I have looked everywhere ( for free of coarse )

thanks a Million Ian.

Ian Sorry bud I have no idea what you are talking about...
Can you possibly take a few photies and post them maybe we can assist - Sorry many different rods on different motors.

That Merc motor is actually a Yamaha motor - try and get the Parts manual from Yamaha - motors built by same company.

Parts are universal as all that is different on the motor is the colour and the stickers. Die hard motors - that motor is over 35years old and I am sure still starts first time

Shot Ryan... I know the mariner Yamaha history. You reckon its that old? The coils and electronics look tip top (maybe newly replaced) you probably referring to the design ( I was told its a hammerhead or something). I will take a few snaps and post them asap. If I had some documentation I would sort is out chop chop. It seems that there are so many different models, hp, makes etc. Making life a little difficult. She requires a bit of quick start from cold (had the wrong 2 stroke oil got quicksilver now) but she runs ok I Guess. But man it stuffs your arm up pulling that thing just more than 3 times. Slowly learning the right way to do it, Put your back into it is an understatement! Do these outboards need an air filter? there ain't one in mine!

No Outboards have air filters......
Welcome to boating the only way to make mistakes is to learn from them.
Before long you will know what to do to pull start that motor that it fires on the first half turn.
Check the Gap on your plugs.
Write down the Serial no Phone a Yammie agent and ask him for the year model etc. Just looking at that motor I would put it Early '70's

Hey nice boat, you gonna enjoy exploring kwaggas and the rest with that. Did it come with COC, COF, you'll need you skippers too but sure you are aware of that but just in case :)

Thanks Guys! Here is the deal, I spoke to the guys that sold me the boat, they say it has a manual transom lock (it doesn't). I cannot wait on people, so I dropped the bottom section. To me it looks as if there is some parts missing.

It doesn't make sense (mechanically) to me how this is supposed to work. the gear selector shaft only turns it doesn't move up or down therefore how does it affect the rod that locks the transom. there must be something I am missing here.

Please help.

The first pic shows the rod that connects the locking mech into the gearbox section (when I got it the rod was floating around in there clearly not connected even in and out of gear). the plastic piece with 2 holes does nothing from what I can see. the second pic is the gearbox section

In my mind in order for the concept of locking the motor to the transom in reverse to work. the rod would have to be held up in reverse, thus locking the motor. don't see this working out with the parts I got.

don't worry Willem I build far more Sophisticated machinery for a living! This will be a piece of cake ( I hope, Sh1t happens). Just asking as I have no Manual to go by. cannot wait for kwaggas tho. And i would have you old boat if you called me in time. lol.

Ian - Just a silly Question - have you had this motor on the water yet?

Reason I ask is that Rod looks very much like the Gear Selector arm. Which engages Forward and reverse with either an up or a down movement.

COnfirm In post 10 that this rod screws into the Lug nut in front of the Drive shaft?

To clarify. the motor runs! goes into gear forward and reverse (tested it) the rod in question (the bent one) is the one attached to the locking mech. the gear selector in the rod in the centre on post 14. It only twists left and right to select fwd and rev not up and down. everything works exept the locking in reverse story. Not been on water yet.

Take it out if it locks the motor in place - much better if you hit something in the water the motor pops up - one of the faliures with Trim and tilt.

Only time you get a bit of a problem is when you have to reverse in a hurry then the motor will pop up. but if you reverse slowly the there should be no problem. You are unlikey to reverse in a hurry as you donot have many Hiphopandthomases in the W cape.

Ryan gave you VERY GOOD ADVICE, follow it

Never lock a motor down, cause if you hit something with a locked motor you gonna either be without a motor or a stuffed gearbox casing !
And yes, people HAVE LOST MOTORS because of it

JUST REVERSE SLOWLY otherwise the motor will lift
