My first try

My first try. Made a plaster of paris mould and then used resin to mould the body. I had some fiberglass resin and used some. Plaster of paris moulds however does not work all that well. It tends to break when you remove the lure from it.

The second one I made. Still new at the lure making thing and the airbrushing. Hope to one day make lures like Bennie. The man is amamzing!!!

Did not make this one. Some cheap dull spoon that was laying around. Tried my airbrushing skills on it. Hope it will get beter.

If that is your first attempts, you going to kick ass later on! Those lures look pretty cool man! My first lures were absolute crap compared to what you are doing!

I especially like the third one you posted. Very nice!

Keep them coming!

Ceasar, those (for a first try) look really good man, have you only tried Plaster of paris for moulding material? If you wanna make resin lures try making a mold of silicone, something like RTV (Bennie actually uses something else which I think might be better).

Also when airbrushing, try sparying very little at a time, that will make it far easier to get it exactly the way you want it and that spoon, where you tried the scale effect with netting, pull the netting tighter and keep it in place until the paint dried out a wee bit (not completely), just some pointers to try and help you save some time and frustration that we've had to go through as there was very few that helped when we started.

Thank you the tips LGF. I will try with my next one. Where can I get the silicone to make the moulds with. Plaster of paris is more of a once off mould, it break way to easy. Thank you again for the advise.

@LGF, yes i have only tried plaster of paris. @Bennie this is me hitting the buzzer. I think the silicone moulds will last longer. I will try the net thing again and post some pics.

@ Bennie, I know you also use silicone, but if memory serves me at all, I think you use some better stuff than the RTV I use, seem to recall that you mentioned something to that effect, perhaps I'm mistaken.

@ Ceasar, Bud, just wait for Bennie to reply wrt the other silicone in question, however if he also uses RTV, then there;s a place in PTA in Lynburn street, called Plastocure, they sell the RTV in 1kg's tubs, but for the life of me cannot remember the price, think it's in the region of R490 (I think, realy cannot remember).

@LGF. It depends on what we are doing really. I have used various RTV's, POP, clay and Polyurethanes in soft and hard pourable forms. For Pouring lead or tin we use a completely different product to pouring resin. Mouldmax 30 is not suited to hot applications because it distorts when heated but for other reasons too.

For this application I recommend the Mouldmax 30 from AMT. But make the wall around quite wide, no less than 15mm. Do a search here. You will find a tutorial Touruck did on making a mould. It is very good except he made one mould for 10 different things which I didn't like and he made it for lead which also isn't right because he used Mouldmax 30. But the mould making concept is very good! When you follow the tutorial, you will see he also uses a release agent on the lead pieces, this is not necessary. The Vasaline on the one half of the mould when he pours the second half is very important.

Very NB: Preparing your silicone for use.

1 - An important step though is to go buy the stuff yourself. Look on the containers, they have sell by dates. Buy the freshest stuff and look for ones where the label hasn't been altered.

2 - Get silicone thinners. Add 8% thinners and mix it into the container of silicon. Let it stand for 24 hours before you used it. This will make it more vicous and help eliminate air bubbles.

N.B. You can only add thinners once. You cannot do it again as it will break it down and that is why I say make sure they have not thinned the stuff already and replaced or modified the label.

Just around the corner is a under statement, just 3km. Just phoned, they have in stock, will pick some up this afternoon. Man, Im like a little boy with a new toy! Bennie were do you get your stainless wire? I can not find thinner than 1.6mm.

I use 0,9mm and 1,2mm mig welding wire which I have spools of. If you need some, PM me with a postal addy and I can send you some.

Or check with any welding workshop around there.

Just got 1kg of Moldmax 30, the catalyst, modeling putty and a release agent, all for R309.28. @Bennie I have looked all over but can not find thinner then 1.6. I'll pm you.

OK, 2 things.

1 - You don't need that mould release, you need vasaline. It is way better!
2 - You didn't get the silicone thinners? It's not absolutely necessary but it will help with the quality of your mould.

I'll send you the thinner wire on Thursday, overnight so you have it for the weekend.
