howsit guys

So after moving to Pretoria from JBay I've been doing some bass fishing with zucas but I've been wanting more..

Yesterday I went and got myself an ultralight setup, a megaforce rod (UL model), a sedona 1000 and spooled it with 5lb XX... Got a few lures and hit the dam this morning

Started with a little Salmo hornet and got some small bass and canaries to start off with.. Zucas then showed me what a small spinner can do and I changed over to a size 0 effzet

I immediately started catching more fish (not that the salmo wasnt working)

So here's the biggest Canary of the day, man we caught like hundreds! really pretty fish

Later on we came to a deep point and I got a bite and was vas... immediately felt it was a big fish as it just sat there and bumped its head a bit... 'it doesnt know its hooked dude, HKGK!!!' ZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!

haha at first I thought yellow cos it ran at great speed to deeper water and then back again... then it blew bubbles!ah a barbel! (on a size 0 spinner???)

fiinally was able to lift it up and saw it was a nice healthy looking bass :fswim

My pb at around 3kg... damn this ultralight fishing is awesome I'm hooked!!

We also saw some barbel shallow, managed bite each but couldnt get the hooks to sit vas..

a good day on the water, looking forward to some big barbel next :)

WOW! That bass on an Ultralight must have been legendairy! Congrats. I'm guessing you fished at Harties? I see the artlure bug has bit you guys hard. Fishing will just get better and this was the first lekker trip of many to come. Wait 'till you can add barbel and carp to these trips. This weekend at our league at Rust de Winter 2 guys managed to catch canaries of about 360g!

thanks guys

ja man that bass gave a hell of a fight!
dude I'm amped to be able to add carp and barbel to the repertoire... See plenty carp bubbles all over the place so once the technique is down its gonna be interesting :)

those are big do you have pics?

Critter because it's so light it comes up very quickly so I let it sink to the bottom and wind it as slowly as possible while still feeling the vibrations of the blade

Aqua, when I want to keep a very small Size 0 spinner down, sometimes I'll put a small bullet sinker on the front. Like the ones we use for the plastic worms and stuff. If you use one that's the right size, you still get the effect of the sinker but it doesn't put the fish off.

I tried this at Hazelmere dam 2 weekends ago, I got 6 bass in 2 hours, they really don't seem to mind the bullet sinker.

Some of our clubmembers fished Roodekopjes a few weeks back and caught more than 30 carp on bubbles with the casting technique, biggest weighing over 7kg. I don't have the pics of the canaries yet, but as soon as I can get it i will post it. Oh and watch Hier Gaan Ons Alweer on Kyknet, they have had a few very informative programs on artlure and will be doing a program on Bleomhof soon where they will try to catch a bag of more than 450kg of baberbel all on artlure! The technique you used with the spinner was right on the money. The slower and deeper you bring your spinner in the more effective you are fishing. The trick is to find the right speed so that your spinner keep spinning. I personally don't like putting weights on spinners as it tends to affect the spinners action, I'd rather use a bigger spinner like a nr2 or 3.

Man that turned out to be a great trip , even though the wind was pumping at 50 knots and I managed to drop the boats drain plug in the water "they don't float by the way , who designed that !!??" But some reeds from the bank stuffed up in there kinda worked , oh and the tiny blue kurper I foul hooked put us up to an amazing 3 species lol , but the water isn't looking to bad so here we come mr weekend :p
