My Clipped day old rig

So I thought I would share the rig that I use for casting day olds . I basically borrowed ideas from the R&S guys , essentially it allows you to send the day old a mile as it is more streamlined and doesn't suffer from "helicoptering " .

Im always open to suggestions on how to improve the rig and how others may adapt or improve it . I also use it to cast fish heads and fillets again just to give you that extra distance when needed .

Excuse the drawing , but it is just to give a basic understanding of the rig .

2 Oz grapnel sinker with clip , tie on a piece of mono (longer than hook line)

Tie on a barrel swivel and thread through mainline so that it slides along the length of your mainline .

Tie mainline to small jap swivel . I then tie my hook line say .47mm XX onto the other end of the swivel + 60 cm.

The sinker should now hang about 15 cm or so below the hook which allows you to clip it onto the hook .

I then push a small cable tie through the day olds eyes and form a loop , close the loop onto the shank of your chosen hook.

And finally clip the sinker onto the hook and send it , as the bait hits the water the pressure will separate the 2 . The sinker will then be free to slide along your mainline .

I have been using a grapnel sinker for a while now with the arms for no specific reason , haven't been snagged yet . If there is more structure I will advise to clip off the arms

I use the release type grapnel sinkers.

My problem with day olds was always getting some distance to certain drop offs fishing from the bank as they are too light.When casting the standard sliding rig it would always go helicoptering and sacrifice distance . Last December I had some extra time on my hands and decided to experiment which is when I found a few different clipped bait rigs in the saltwater section . I have been using this rig since New Years eve and caught both my last cat of 2013 and 1st of 2014 on it and landed around another 20 since then . The key is to make sure that the sinker line is a lot lighter than the main or hook lines so that it snaps off if you get stuck , I will be putting this rig through its paces in November when I finally get to fish the Orange but so far so good .

Just one question though..

In Hennie Ppenfus's dvd's he removes the head and the skin if i'm not mistaken..

I havn't seen the dvd either..

Does anyone have a take on this..??

Ive got the DVD, for me it hasn't made much difference and I prefer to present it as naturally as possible.
