Thanks guys,i really want to catch a decent one when down at Witsands during my holiday in January.I have caught a few juveniles in the past of wich the largest one were about 70 cm.Was targeting Cob at daybreak when the cracker took my pillie bait. The others were on mud-prawn.I have seen some monsters being landed there and this has started my quest.

Boet if you can get to jongensfontein, stillbaai, you almost garaunteeed a big cracker. Well pick-up anyway. Ive had more hidings there than anything else. Big poensies live there. Do yourself a favour, fish .58-.60mm mainline and 1.2mm leader. Hit and hold. Hook wise I like to use a sharpend 11/0 mustad hoodlum for those bad boys. Also, you dont need to throw far hey. Cracker love working water around reefs. Hit them hard dude. Tiit lines for december.

The trusted adage is always that the fresher that bait is, the better! I try and keep my crabs alive as long as possible, even if they die at the time of rigging i.e. if the hook shank is pushed through its body.

If I rig him live, with the hook flat against the carapace, I always tie the legs of the crab against the hook snoot, and leave legs on the other side free to dangle and move. This is to prevent him from scurrying under rocks or other protective cover.

Must the crab be alive or can it be dead ?

Busy reading through some threads cos I wanna go cracker fishing and just refreshing a bit....

A trick I use  so that I put a live crab onto my hook is to carry a snippers with me when I hunt the crabs and clip either the top or the bottom pincer off on each front leg and then you can handle the crab without it nipping you! And of course you then have a live crab on your hook! ;)
