Mussel Cracker in estuaries and rivers

Some of my friends in Knysna catch big MusselCracker in the Knysna Lagoon when the water is very cold at sea.

Suposedly the Cracker hide from the cold water in the lagoon where the water is slightly warmer.

Can anybody confirm this and what about other rivers in easterncape like sundays and swartkops.

This is a very interesting fishing story for me and I would love to hear the sealine experts and what their opinion is.

Could this not be because of spawning, I know that Pignose come into the rivers to bread, here in East London there are some big Pignose in the blind rivers...they can catch you by surprise when you fishing for mullet on light tackle and a float lol, I nearly peed myself once...

I've seen plenty of small ones in estuaries and plenty of zebra as well. probably breeding in rivers or just the young ones moving in, don't know. and I am not talking about open mouths like knysna, but far upstream in quiet waters near any structure like jetties, etc

Last week a guy got crackers in swartkops river near the mouth. At the N2 bridge that goes over the river...

I was told this by the oom in uitenhage that sells bait from his house...

He also said to us that, certain times of the year Cracker only takes soft baits because it gives its teeth a rest or something of that sort...

I've never seen any cracker in swartkops or sundays, but miracles do happen and nobody has ever mentioned it to me

Zambezis yes, but not cracker, but that said there are lots of black mussels and oysters on the wall and bridges

if there were lots of rocks around the mouth area it would definately happen more often, but from marine drive to swartkops is a long swim!

Sometimes people mistake a large stumpie for a small cracker. The estuarys that i know of people getting regular cracker like knysna and bushmans have both rocky mouths with clean water flowing in and out of these systems.

Caught 2 small crackers in the Seekoei river in Ashton Bay on mudprawn. The mouth is closed most of the year, but also have some rocks close or in front of the mouth when open. Released, so they must still be there and getting bigger. Would be interesting to tag them and see where they would make an appearance when the mouth is open again.

Last year a old grandma caught a 9 kilo cracker off the old railway bridge over knysna lagoon with a handline.
Remember that knysna lagoon is pretty much just a huge quiet bay and is constantly open to the sea and deep.
