Afternoon,

Been a while since I posted anything from up North. We have had a fairly good season so far with some good GTs and YFT.

We had the owner of Fisherman Products Suzuki-san with a team from Japan fish with us for three days and I thought I knew a bit about popping and jigging but this guy is a whole different level. The guy is 59 years old and can pull a GT flat out. On the last day he caught 5 GTs all over 25kg and lost one at the boat around 50kg, and was still up for more! Think I have to hit the gym!

The attention to detail on the tackle set up and terminal tackle is perfect everything is checked and re-checked. They fish a lot lighter on the gear due to physical size and it was interesting to see the different methods of popping from what we use. In all it was a great trip and a few new techniques learnt!

We managed one 50kg fish on the trip which was awesome, fantastic take and well fought. We got about 23 GTs in the 3 days and dropped about the same number of fish for various reasons but a great trip.

We coming into the season with the big fish showing up so hopefully the 60kg will come this season!

HI Ocean Active, how long  back was this, nice catches. would love to know if their is some place closer to Dubai that you know of to have the same experiance.

would love to join you guys some time let me know what to do.

Morning,

We fish in Oman and UAE. These fish were caught in the Musandam in the Straits of Hormuz. Really amazing place that has been left in the passed with not many roads and the only way to get up there is by boat. We have a couple of boats and a villa up there. Rich and the guys from Off the Charts fished with us last year and there are a couple of shows on Supersport the next few weeks if you check out their website. Unfortunately our Mnet has been cut off for good, so no more SA fishing shows and rugby, still very bleak about it!

The tackle that they were using was mainly Shimano Stellas and a couple of Saltigas, but the Saltigas took big strain and got put away. The rods are Fisherman rods made by Suzuki-san. The reels were spooled with 130lbs Verivas Braid and 300lbs leaders. He was testing new Fisherman design stickbaits that he is releasing later this year. He is one of the original Japanese pioneers of popping and jigging. He has been running Fisherman for almost 25 years so been in the game a long time, his website is http://www.fisherman.ne.jp/ Rods are very expensive but after seeing them in action they are a piece of art!

Hi Spirits, good to see you in UAE. We do a lot of fishing in and around Dubai and Abu Dhabi for queens and golden trevally. There are a lot around at the moment so the fishing is good. We do put trips together for guys wanting to share and we also have a big group of SA boys fishing so send me a PM and I'll get it sorted out. But unfortunately for the GTs you have to travel and spend a bit of bucks. We also have a shop opening on 1 August in the Dubai Garden Center so more than welcome to come around and have some coffee and talk fishing!

Unreal report Nick, fantastic to see you back in the action and sharing the pics and tales with us here on SL again... Was wondering how things have been going up your part of the world.

What a fantastic experience it must have been fishing with the FISHERMAN team.... As you said, one of the true originators of Jigging and popping tackle and techniques... I think FISHERMAN rods are probably the ultimate in GT popping and Jigging rods, and probably the priciest!!!
But by all accounts, definitely worth it!! One day I'll add one to my stable I hope...
The new stickbait looks pretty damn good, and very effective!!! Looking forward to seeing those on the market...

Congrats on another epic trip, and look forward to seeing that 60 kilo GT report soon hopefully.

Good to hear from you! It has been quite a strange year with issues not really related to fishing, but we have had good fishing throughout and have caught some good fish. A lot of sailfish and yft showed up for the first time in about 15 years which was good fun.

Suzuki-san came and fished with us last year but the red tide was in full swing so the trip was a bit of a wash out, but this year it was awesome. It was interesting to hear all the reasons why he has built the tackle he has and a lot of the tackle on the market today was originally designed by him. Really well thought out gear and tactics and for a 59 year old he can put pressure on a fish! He has booked for next April again so maybe try sort out a rod from him over the next year!

There are a few big fish around at the moment so hopefully the 60 will come over the next few weeks, but the usual problem with Murphy showing up that we will hook the fish on a light rig!

Nick - You guys must really get to learn some amazing tricks and techniques from the likes of Suziki-San and his team, and all the other guys you get to fish with as well...
Stoked the trip panned out well for them this year, and that last years red tide seems to be a thing of the past and you guys are klapping good fish again...
Good to hear the FISHERMAN guys are coming back again.... with the choices of places and operators they have to fish with all round the globe, you know you've done a great job when they book again to come back...

I'm confident that 60 plus will show up this year, and more than likely on your KGS/SR12 combo, but thats Murphy for ya..... maybe Murphy will be asleep for a day, and the Tokara/Komodo or whatever you are swinging these days is the rod in hand when Big Mamma shows herself...

By the way, I've got a Ripplefisher 78XH spare if you need a SERIOUS FISH stick to chuck monster poppers to those brutes.... let me know if you keen...

Hi Nick thanks, I was at the Barracuda Fishing shop in Dubai Marina today and the guy working their said most people purchasing from him is South Africans and spending thousands off Dirham’s at once. They received brand new lures and poppers that looks absolutely awesome and is not so expensive.

I will try to take some picks and post it. Keep in touch, what kind of shop will you be running in the Garden Centre?? 

 

Dingleberry invited me once to go with them to Fujairha but I was not able to make it. Do you know him?? He is on this forum as well.

The trip worked out well and we also had bad weather which made it all that much sweeter!

 

The KGS and SR12 have been serviced and ready to go! I'll give it a good crack on the light gear if it happens but I have two Carpenter WV with SR30s waiting with the biggest stickbaits I could find! I tried the Ripplefisher this last week and it is an awesome rod, so would love to give it a work out one day! Maybe you have to come play up this side?

I know the Barracuda very well, I helped set it up and built the website. It is a good shop but lacks a lot of sportsfishing items and hence us opening a shop with all the toyz! I still buy quite a few items from the Barracuda. Dingleberry fished with us about 10 days ago in the Musandam. Really good guys and love fishing, if you get a chance you should take it up as they are fishing mad.
