Murray Park report 19/05/2009

Hi guys

After a very unproductive day . Decided to go to Murray park and maybe brighten up my day a bit. Got there at about 16:30. Went straight down to the bridge where we park our cars. (there are quite a few of us that meet up after work and join up there as the fishing at the dam is good at the moment).

I arrived about an hour early. And knowing a few of my mates have been mugged and shot in the past, but quite a while ago. The intensity of the subject tends to subside with time. Hence the reason we brave forward and venture further out.

But this evening I had a first hand reminder to what can happen. I got there early and didnt see anyone angling but i got my rigs together and off I went. Jumped the fence, and started working the water on both sides of the path. I noticed a guy right at the top of the path, but thought nothing of it and carried on. Moving further and further away from the resort. Then he started moving towards me. At first I told myself that I was over reacting as many people short cut through the resort as it is shorter route to get to the location. But low and behold, drop your guard for one second and suddenly there were three. Out of no where.

I greated them as I wasnt sure if i was being paranoid or not. They started asking me stupid questions like entrance fees to Murray park. And thats when i knew what was going on. They were trying to get me off the path out of sight. One of them had his hand in his bag, a gun. Lol, I saw my gap and these twenty two year old legs can move. I high jumped the gate and they turned around and disapeared .

So ya, they are back. Be careful if you are going to jump that fence to where the guys have been shot in the past. They are still operating around there.

What bugs me the most is that how a dam i grew up fishing at, caught my first bass at and learnt to bass fish at has become so dangerous. And i am only 22 so this is happening fast.

Be safe and fish in groups.

And welcome to the new South Africa.

The following article has nothing to do with Murray park RESORT. As all anglers entering the resort cross that bridge at there own risk!!!

REC well done. If anything guys can learn that if you want to fish these days, you need to be vigilant and check what's going on around you. It might be the only reason ur able to tell the story.

I never go fishing without my trusty life partner Mr.9mm but let me tell you it doesn't solve the problem nor does it always help.

If you get into a shooting incident and go to court they ask you why you took a firearm with you fishing. If you say it was for self protection they turn around and say "So you knew it was dangerous there but still went and now someone got shot".

it just doesn't help.

You can say that again, its like trying to drive a 4x4 course with a mini... You know you will get in trouble but still you go.
