Mtunzini in winter

Hey guys,

Really looking forward to a week long adventure to Mtunzini in the first week of July this year. Last time I went there (Jan this year), i only had moderate success. Couple of nice pompano and stumpies on pink prawn. This time im hoping to tackle something slightly heavier (edibles or not) by sliding some live or dead baits out.
I have questions however :
1. Are there any sort of land marks to find good spots? Last time it was a wide open stretch of beach with no noticeable fishing spots, so had to just pick a spot randomly and cast in.
2. Is the river productive? Does it open to the sea at all?
3. Any specific baits to be used?
4. What types of fish can one expect to catch there in winter?

Please help... anyone?

Yeah thanks Leonard (looks like you have been doing battle with some big fish) , would be keen to try my luck with some big skates. Anyone know if the kob are present around that time? Also if the sardine run gets up that high?

Howzit .  The fish you can expect to catch would garrick , kob , shad

most common species caught in winter. Dont know any specific spots though.

Heard that Mtunzini beach has been already producing some small kob.

Have you tried Port Dunford ? Very nice and secure area , near a river mouth

so it also should produce kob? Give a try a slide out a shad head if you the chance,

generally there are big diamonds present there. So GOOD LUCK :wfish

Awesome thanks Diesel! Will give Port Dunford a try then if its nearby. Was thinking of also making a few trips through to Umtata River mouth and some of the other surrounding areas. Heard it can be pretty productive there and think I should be going at the right time of year...

Fishing was slow bru. We fished hard, but it didnt seem that there was much coming out anywhere. I think that massive cold front that came through just before we got there had something to do with it. Sea was really messy and only improved on the last day we were there so we fished mainly in the umlalazi river. So now that i got all the excuses out the way...

Didnt catch anything of a decent size. The variety of fish was encouraging though. 5 different species caught - Stumpies on sardine, Silver Silageo (i think is the name) on prawn , pompano on prawn, yellowbelly rock cod on drop shot, and a small shad on sardine. The fish came out throughout the day, not specifically morning or evening. A guy we spoke to said he caught a decent sized cob (Salmon) in the estuary on sardine at bout 4am though. A local said there are 12 different fish species in the river, so its exciting when you do get a bite!

Im sure the fishing will be better when you are there. Hopefully the sea would have calmed down, as it was looking a lot better the day we left. Murphy's law!
