Mtunzini Estuary info needed

Hi guys,

I have been spending some time fishing with artificials within the etuary. I have had some good success up river in the darker water, but I really want to figure out how to catch some fish (any species) in the cleaner water closer to the mouth area. The water there looks so promising but I haven't even had one pull there yet. The guys fishing with bait seem to be quite successful, I just can't figure out how to get them to take a lure. I have tried 2'5" inch paddle tails, rapalas (big and small) and poppers in most colors but nothing.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

I've managed to catch 22 species in this system. Most of my fish have come from the middle section, from the car park to the straights before the stone wall. A lot of fish are structure bound, so focus on these areas, i.e. sunken trees, over-hanging trees, mangrove roots, the stone wall itself. Any fish taken from "open water" would either be patrolling a drop-off or on the move either up or down the system. Sea pike love a drop shot - doesn't have to be a paddletail - best colour is the pearl blue shad by Berkley - and these fish are usually full up at this time of year, along with a number of Kingfish species, Shad and Springer (although I haven't caught the latter - although hooked two in this estuary!).

Thanks for the reply. I usually have great success fishing the estuary, but haven't managed to catch anything closer to the mouth in the clear water. I think a good place to start will be on the flats in the clear water and try to target some flatheads/gurnards and take it from there. I must admit, I haven't tried targeting gurnard in this system yet.
