For December 2010 down in the Mosselbay, we had cold water fishing.....So the cob were off the bite, but the Romans & Santer visited a plenty!
Water temps in general were between 15 and 17 degrees C.....eish....for me normally fishing off the Natal coast that was extremely cold, but alas we had some plans up our sleaves.....We launched 4 times at Mosselbay Ski Boat Club, a very crowded afair over the December period!
In total for the holiday, we got 15 Santer (released 10) , 24 Red Roman (released 18), 3 Copper Steenbras (all released) and plenty hammer heads....The copper steenbras, though small was a surprise catch for us.... it was good to see them swim off again.
The biggest fun probably for us was trolling sardines with swimming lips for sharks......that was great fun! Use circle hooks please, then you catch them in the corner of the mouth and the release is a breeze!
Ahhhh.....before I forget....bait: If you bottom in Mosselbay, spend the few extra bucks and get export calamari.....We tried everything sardines, red bait and normal bait type calamari....caught a couple of fish, but the moment we hooked that export calamari our strike rate almost doubled.
For those of you who plan to tow their boats down to the Cape from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo or the North West, you can seriously consider going via Kimberley. For me travelling from Middelburg to Heroldsbay via Bloem is 1,326km and going via Kimberley is 1,394km, thus a small distance extra. The Kimberley road is nice and wide, we had almost no traffic to contend with and what was even better very few trucks to pass as well.
