Another stupid question: Is it possible to cast it without it breaking off when the rig hits the water?

It doesnt break off when you cast because it is compressed and held on the hair rig with a piece of maize or artificial maize. I can imagine that it would come off quicker if put directly on a hook but coming off from the cast and hitting the water no.

I had my one line out for for over an hour and reeled it in and casted it out again to other carp feeding with the same punched piece of bread. I eventually gave up and reeled the lines in and the bread was still on the hair. The outer layer was very stoggy but the centra was still quite hard.

Pleasure, just try and get 2 different size syringes and test the method at home in a bowl of water before doing your session.

I tried it at Struben dam on saterday. Used a small 5ml syringe. Hooked it onto #2 hooks. On the one trace loaded with them, they actually stayed on for close to 2 hour.

Hi all
This weekend I will for the first time try an Hair Rig, and ofcourse you're broodjie method. Just want to know, if you use a hair rig, do you need a sinker, if so, were do you put it? I'll be casting off the bank.
Thanks!

Here is the safety rig thats used for specimen fishing and instead of the boilie on the hair rig you use the punched bread as in my description

This is the inline rig

Hi Unlimited. The reason is simple. Specimen guys don't really "Strike" into the fish. We trust the resistance of the weight to do that for us. Remember now the hook on a typical specimen rig is exposed, thereby the carp accidently hooks or rather  "pricks" itself upon inhaling/exhaling the bait into its mouth. Ussually on exhaling. Basically what happens is the carp picks up the hookbait, but at some time feels resistence or starts doubting the authenticity of the particle/bait it picked up.

Upon exhaling the hook turns and using a good rig the hook will just prick and lightly penetrate the bottom lip. This prick is felt by the carp which then "bolts" off with speed. That's when the weight does its work. When the fish sets off the heavy weight remains stationary and takes the initial grunt of the run, thereby forcing proper penetration of the hook.  Hence the name "bolt rig".

Generally all hair rig "alikes" are bolt rigs - meaning as the fish "bolts" off due the the first prick in it's mouth, the weight is heavy enough to cause the hook to properly penetrate. Just one reason the specimen guys use good quality chemically sharpened hooks in a proper specimen shape. It's imperative the rig you use makes the hook turn into the (preferably) lower jaw and penetrates deep enough with the initial "prick" to penetrate properly once the fish "bolts" off. This said remember not to over complicate your rigs.  I still go with "stick to the basics". Hope this answers your question. : )
