MORE BARK THAN BITE

Hi gents,

It always seems so effortless how other guys cruise past me on the beach when i'm fishing.I drive a nissan hardbody DC 4x4.Problem is whenever i drive on the sand, even though the tyres are deflated to 1.5bar,the rev's are sky high but the bakkie doesn't seem to going as smoothly thru the sand as i would like for it to be moving.Someone once mentioned to me that it might be my clutch. If anybody who drives a similar vehicle or maybe knows what the problem might be could be of assistance, it would be appreciated. It's petrol driven 30l.

Thanx

Percy i also owned a Nissan d-cab 4x4 in the days when beach driving was still permitted. I used to deflate my tyres below 1 bar at times if my memory serves me right. Get a tyre pressure gauge to ensure pressure is even around all 4 tyres.

Play around a bit and go down to 1.2 and then a bit lower based on observation and feel. Hope that makes sense. Should float easier over the sand

P.S how come you riding on the beach? Boat/permit......bliksem i miss those days when it was still allowed.

thanx for the feedback guys, i hav never really tried driving it in 4H only in 4L, will give it a try and get back to. This whole 4X4 thing is still new to me even my mechanical knowledge is nothing to speak of if u know what i mean .lol. Once again thanx for ya'll input, i hope it's something that i'm doing wrong and not something major mechanically.Cheers

The type of tyres are also important. My Moz friend's land rover at 1 bar doesn't show any signs of deflation so he has to charge each sand hill while every one else just idles over it. LOL, he still tells met land rovers doesn't get stuck, my seeing it was the first time ;-)

The idea is that the tyres makes a wider bigger flat surface that would not cut into the sand, so width also makes a big difference. Marie biscuits would cut right in. You don't have to rev into the red, just where you get ample torque to sustain momentum. Don't ride the clutch if you don't have an auto - which btw is superior to manual boxes over any terrain, and if you have a diesel where torque is low down in the revs, it's almost ideal.

Hi fanie, brand spanking new tyres,245/75/R15 Firestones, what i'm saying is that i move across the sand @ a slow pace but rev's are higher than what it's supposed to be.Raadop!!

I think 4L is your problem.

If your tyres is around 1 - 1.2 you should be able to cruise on the sand in 2nd at close to idle speed.

By reading your post and the comments received and as pointed out.

Dont use 4x4 low range (only in extreme conditions)

Deflate tyres to 1 bar, or even .8 the wider the tyre contact the easier the drive.

Do not drive on your clutch, drive normally as if you are on a hard surface

Dont stay in 1st gear, pull away 1st but try to cruise in 2nd or 3rd.

Snad driving is all about momentum boet. Get into 2nd and keep going at a steady pace and don't stop unless youhave to. When you stop also brake very slowly or roll to a stop otherwise you drive sand in front of you tyres. Actuallybit like a boat actually or maybe that is just my Rangie:)

hOOP DIT HELP.

Kontak vir Johan by First Alignment Centre in Brackenfell dat hy jou vir 'n training kursus Atlantis Duine toe vat. Daarna sal jy nie issues he nie.

Goue reel van 4x4 is dat Low Range net regtig nodig is wanneer die situasie dit vereis andersins nie.
