A mate and I went to Durban harbor on Tuesday to do some fishing near BAT centre, there at the tug basin. We walked to the end and were throwing crackers into the channel on the incoming tide. Managed to land a few baby grunters and a small stumpy.
After about an our this ballie who looked like an older Hulk Hogan with a serious carguard tan arrived with his dog. The uncle walked to the end threw a line in and put his other rod down. Next thing we see his spare rod floating away and he start running to get it back. My mate commented that the uncle might be goeft or something lol. :rasta
He started throwing an old 2l coke bottle and his dog bailed in to go get it a few times. Now with the dog swimming up and down between our lines I started getting a bit bleak and moved to the other side to do some spinning.
Soon after, a huge car carrier pulled in and 2 tugs started maneuvering around to push it into the berth. Watched the water turn very brown with all the sand pushed up from the tugs and few guys decided to fish elsewhere.
Suddenly we hear the uncle laughing and yelling. He was on with something BIG. By this time there was just myself and my buddy, the ballie and his dog, and another youngster trying with dropshot. Old man managed to land a monster of a Rockcod. Easily around 5kg. :fst: He was super stoked.
When we decided to pack up later we stopped to talk to the uncle and he mentioned that we should try further up at the maritime museum, between the old warship and the other old boat there. He said there were crazy big monsters around there. "Scary stuff", he said, but he gave up there a while back because he was always outgunned and lost tons of tackle there. :ssswim:
He explained that we should use a cracker or fillet of sardine, and the smallest amount of weight to get it down - even just a splitshot. Now when you go there you can see many folks have tried getting between those 2 boats because of all the floats and traces and even a few lures stuck on the anchor ropes. So maybe there is some beast jamming around there.
My question is, what do you guys reckon it could be and what would be the best way to try and target it? Live bait under a float maybe? Also curious about your opinions on using circle hooks with floats.
