And the lesson to learn is the BIG ones are not swimming deep they are close to shore in the shallow waters.

I'm trying to picture landing that sucker on shore and then trying to get it into a little city hopper like a Golf. Definitely worth it though!

P.S. I've recently seen quite a few small red steenbras in False Bay and I think I may have spotted a wit steenbras too.

@Echart

My father has told me stories of how they used to catch Red Steenbras inbetween Die Drie Branders at Die Dam in shallow water where you can see the bottom and the Stonebrothers swimming around leisurely.

Pity to see such a nice rare fish getting killed.

The divers often report White Steenbras in the Simonstown area. Fish Hoek trekkers netted some last year.

Hey BTTB,

These fish are beautiful under the water. I saw a small school of them last weekend. ALL undersized, but great to see them breeding so close to home.

On another note, I hope to see you at the Krans tomorrow.
I'm sure the Tail will start coming in to feed...

Cheers,
L

Holy smokes !! That is a fish of a lifetime in extraordinary circumstances.

I saw a red about 6 years back on a deep pinnacle off Gericke's that I estimated at 25kg,judging by this ones size and being 36kg the guesstimate was spot on.It was in a competition,the season was closed and the boats were subject to searches at the slip,my trigger finger is still itchy today :wfish

Gericke point, i believe the current SA spearfishing record was taken there. Cant remember by who but the guy went out and got one i think it was about 100 pounds and the next day broke his own record.
