Mom, our two month old Giant and myself visited my Dad at Franskraal for the last 3 days. Tuesday and Thursday would be windy as you can get, with Wednesday the milder windy day. Wednesday late afternoon will be the time to be fishing. Barometer rising slightly before the storm comes in, high tide and the wind turning from east to west.
So Dad and myself head off for fresh prawn and blood worm. Quick, quick 30 nice sized prawn and 3 bloodworm and we are on the gruis at 17h30. The bays at the back looks like a PnP parking lot with all the parked bakkies. We head off to one of the smaller bays accomodating the bigger stronger water better.
In went the first casts - Dad, pretty much a Galjoen fan and a wit steenbras fan in summer, baited with prawn straight away. With a ditch infront of us, then a shallow sand bank and with two sandbanks further out, Dad was fishing the second sandbank and myself tried the third sandbank, but couldn't reach it in the strong wind. But three casts later with approaching darkness and not a touch on the bloodworm neither the prawn and with many nicks on our lines from the many kelp in the water, I decided to change to the light rig.
Out with the Poseidon Gold Class 3-4once and a SL30 with some .40mm line. The light rig can cast the distance, but I still needed about 10m or so to get over the last sandbank on the slightly outgoing tide. Baited with fresh mullet fillet, I made the swim through the ditch onto the first sandbank in almost darkness and got the bait out behind the third sandbank. 2 minutes and the fish runs towards me. Reel up the slack and a fish on! The fish is on Red Bull, because my first call is a big spottie. But then a head shake and the drag on the SL30 gets reduced by quite a bit. A 10 minute fight with a fish on Red Bull follows and Dad can't see the leader in the darkness. So I have to climb down the rocks with the rod in hand to grap the fish. A nice 6.2kg kobbie!
