Went to Mkambati for five days, returning on Wednesday last week. Stayed at Point Cottage on the North side of Msikaba river. Accomodation pretty rustic - no electricity and freezer was actually more of a fridge - so keeping bait fresh was a problem.
We fished the bay to the right of point cottage and picked up lots of shad, Karanteen and blacktail. Couple of mullet too. Slid livies, but no pickups. Bay may be too shallow. Wind blowing hard each day so fishing in front a problem, though it looks a likely spot for low tide when conditions allow.
Drove north to Gwe Gwe and fished of the front - sliding live karos. Huge SE wind and sea on it head. Better than the previous days when it was unfishable. Nothing came out.
Further north the Waterfall bay is quiter protected. We arrived late on our first day down but buys there before us had picked up a couple of really nice bronze bream. Some confusion as to whether fishing is permissable on the South side of that bay or not.
Finally we fished the Msikaba river at the mouth (the only area where fishing is permitted) and picked up baby stumpies and little steenbras on light tackle with cracker as bait. Good fun and protected by the wind. River is really deep in the middle - so I bet there are bigger fish around. Totaslly protected from the wind and v peaceful.
Did not fish the island - seas too big and wind unpleasant.
Lots of different fishing opportunities within a small area though. Looks good for saltwater flyfishing too as lots of deepish gullies of nearby rocks and you can fish in any direction. However the wind blows (and it did), you can always find somewhere to catch.
